My vote goes to Gary Richrath of REO Speedwagon. I have always love the band, and I have a concert of them on video from 81, recorded live in Denver Colorado, and Gary is just on fire. With Gary's guitar solo, the Flyin Turkey Trot, 157 Riverside Avenue, Ridin the Storm Out, Keep Pushin, and so many others, this was one of the best overlooked guitarists of all time. And when he left REO, the band just sunk from there.

Maybe it's just because I live in Montana, and don't hear any of his stuff on the radio, but Zappa for me...

Maybe James Young of Styx (listen to Renegade). Derringer is a great call too. I love Lynyrd Skynard, but I don't think they are too undersung... many people regard Freebird to have "the greastest rock solo ever." Maybe Tipton or Downing of Judas priest - big in their day then quickly forgot about. Great topic...

Rik Emment of Triumph is incredible. Plus he can sing really good while playing guitar riffs.

Alvin Lee of the band Ten Years After. Yeah, it's more late '60s/early '70s, but his band make Cream look like sissypants, and I'm even a fan of Cream.

Tommy Bolin, of the James Gang, Deep Purple, and his solo career. It was rumored that Robert Plant was going to be the singer in The Tommy Bolin Band, until Bolin ODed. He would be so much more recognized if that had happened.

Good question zilla. I always thought Buck Dharma of blue oyster cult is a amazing lead player.and i would have to include Alex lifeson of rush,Andy Summers of the police,Greg Lake of elp.but for overall talent in playing, writing, arranging would have to be Linsey Buckingham of fleetwood mac.

Buck Dharma is a good choice. I dont really think Alex Lifeson was underated, I think he was known very well to most. And arrrgggghh, I cant stand Lindsay Buckingham. A sloppy player in my opinion, but then again, to each their own.;)

Well, Richrath was a good rhythm guitarist, but his solos never flew for me.:toetap05:

I'd say he's a better soloist than Lindsay Buckingham though!

Sorry for the dis, Zillagod. I know you can take it...:D
