I am a frequent dayhiker/long distance hiker, and I enjoy hiking throughtout the Appalachians in Virginia, especially on weekends. Every time I am on the peak of a mountain perched atop jagged granite slabs I feel inclined to meditate. I meditate frequently, at home mainly, or outdoors near my house, but there is no other place in the world I would rather meditate than on top of a lofty mountain amongst the sprawling peaks, and hills in the distance. I feel very connected physically and mentally to mountains, possibly because I was born in the mountains, and have always loved them. The silence of the mountains, the mental and physical distance from anything urban, or busy is an ideal place for me to meditate. I love the peace, and seemingly permanent state of the mountains. I just thought i would share my thoughts with you all in hopes others will find the peace and serenity of the mountains, especially through meditation and or yoga.
i'm the same way when i hike the bluffs around here(if you dont know what a bluff is, its like a small small mountain... its like what valleys are surrounded in.. bluffs are more or less made from the glacial movement and erosion back during the ice age) I usually am in meditative state of mind while i am hiking them....... no one yelling or talking even... no car sounds..... no buildings..... no nothing.... just nature.... sounds of the wind... the animals.... its so relaxing and peaceful....
When I'm in India in a week, I'll be travelling in the foothills of the himalayas and will be meditating there, really looking forward to it, no real mountains in Ireland.
I meditated at Pike's Peak (about 10,000 feet up) in the snow. I just looked at the snow flakes against the mountain rock. I did not speak for 3 months one word to anyone. I came away with the realisation that my life was like that snowflake against the eternity of the mountain.
I haven't really meditated yet up in the mountains but where I currently live there is plenty of them. I do have a sick inner calling to live up in the mountains and to be surrounded by their old standing wisdom. I'm content right now with just feeling that ache by going up on a snowboarding trip many a time during the season. I always feel so intune there... it's amazing. I am lucky enough to have a family that can afford a large house up in a ski resort where the mountains are our backyard whenever we venture up there. Only 3 hours away. Nature isn't too far from all of us.
