In coal country, heat rises over latest method of mining

Monday's explosion has focused attention on mine safety, but environmentalists worry about long-term effects of 'mountaintop removal.'

By Amanda Paulson | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

BOB WHITE, W.VA. – When Maria Gunnoe looks over her 40-acre farm in southern West Virginia, she finds it hard to believe it's the same place that, growing up, she considered her "own little private heaven."
Seven floods in five years have washed out most of her yard, filled her barn with debris, and destroyed parts of her bridge. The stream where she used to swim and catch bait is now a pollution discharge system. The well water is now so toxic that bathing in it has caused problems.

Hi, Luvhuffer. Yep, it's real. Luckily where we live there is not enough coal to bother. It's all about gas wells here. And if you're lucky, you own your own mineral rights or at least have free gas on your property to use any way you want...
I have a friend who is heavily involved in the OVEC. Her name's Vivian Stockman, and bless her, she's made this her lifes work.

You don't know the half of it. I witnessed California developers disassemble an entire mountain (OK, it was a very large hill) in the middle of Portland, Oregon about 8 years ago. They did it one dumptruck at a time. The purpose? They needed a flat spot to put up some high rise condos.

I get crazy angry too. I used to work for Greenpeace for awhile, and we would have these meetings where they would pass around copys of reports or investigations about bad things going on. You would get really depressed, then you would get really angry and want to kick someones ass.

I'm sure Viv and company would like to know so many people in different places are interested. It's a worthy venture, and OVEC seems to have a certain amount of pull... Give us a hand if you can. WV has 13 coal miners trapped underground right now. Probably dead... Prayers to brother coal miners!

There was a large beautiful hill on the outskirts of a city near me. They leveled it one dump truck load at the time to sell the red dirt for landscaping.
