cactus die if you water them too much, or too little. every plant dies with no water. cakti just need very little, but they too need once in a while some drops. During their growing season, (yes, should choose one season to make their growing season, in centrel european climate, spring and summer is recommended, in desterty climates it's the winter) you water more then in the calm period. It also depends on the kind of kaktus. some require more water then others. But looking at it, you should notice when it needs water desperately.........

i noticed it needed water desperately but it was too late. it went all hollow on the inside and this white stuff oozed out of it. considering buying a new cactus.

That means you are less nurturing than a desert :) Sorry to hear about the cactus though.

    Peace :)

make sure it gets lots of light and a warm temp

also some cacti are easier to grow then others ....so check the different types out to see which ones....

I remember when I was a kid (about 7 years old) I had a cactus that I gave it water almost every week and owned it for 2 or 3 years... Don't tell me I was over feeding it, because it was healthy and looking good. So anyway just look at what kind of cactus you buy because they are all UNIQUE!

HaHa Demetri Martin is so funny. :D

That is no big deal though I kill them all of the time. I figure they just were not meant to live in my room.

I work in a greenhouse too. how sad.

Try growing cacti from seed, its fun but its alot harder than other plants id assume.

I am growing different cacti species right now, some of them cold hardy outdoors and some of them are subtropical.

I have some extra seeds if you are interested?

I have Opuntia basilaris and Opuntia compressa seeds.

Opuntia compressa will basically grow almost anywhere in the US, since its very cold hardy and moisture resistant, but O basilaris is a little bit more picky about being drier so is restricted to growing in the Western/SW United states. Opuntia basilaris has some of the most beautiful of blooms in my opinion of any cactus.
