my 2 year old pit and rott mix, has been in good shape untill this summer he started gaining weight. he used to weigh about 60lbs now he's pushing 90lbs? is this a health risk should I put him on a diet? some people told me that will be good for him this winter to keep him warm..but i dont know hes huge and lazy now...and i love him to death so i dont know what i would do if something happened to him especially if it was my fault with over feeding him
Just curious about how much does he eat per day? Also do you feed him at certain times, or does he have an open bowl where he can eat whenever?
hmmm thats odd, thats what i would do also.Although mine eat natures recipe, it has more nutrience in it and they love it. 2ce a day, and never an open bowl with his breed. Maybe hes just big, and now that hes older its showing more. Im stumped, i def wouldnt go down to once a day, not enough in my opinion. Try giving him more to do, like playing fetch more, walking him an extra mile. Maybe hes just not getting enough excercise or he might have a very slow metabolism also. I would also ask his vet for any info, they could probably recomend other remedies. Good Luck
His metabolism could be slowing down. They are similar to people, as they age they get less active and if he is not getting as much exercise his metabolism will slow down as well. You might want to take him to the vet too. Find out if his health is at risk and for any causes. I've heard of many "fat" animals that actually had tumours growing inside. Once they were removed they were half the size. I feel like I've posted this before. Hmmm. Saje
Hi.. I work in an animal hospital, let me give you some advice. My dog put some weight on after he got neuter (June 2003) plus he has a thyroid problem too. Plus he eats eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeverythind and anything. It's not good for a dog to be over weight. It's bad for their heart and arteries. Saje is also right about the tumors. Don't get scare but you should def. see a vet. The vet will tell you exactly what to do and what to feed him! Winter time it's bad for humans and pets, all we do is stay in doors and eat and eat! When weather gets warmer you should also take your dog to the park or long walks! This is my Angus.. Fer
...and remember, just because the bowl is so big, doesn't mean that's how much food should go in there. My dogs get 1 1/2 cups of food per day (3/4 in the morning, 3/4 in the evening). Now, they are 35 pounds... but still, you should probably only be feeding your dog 3 cups of food a day or so... which has to be equivalent to one bowl.
