My name is Zak. 17 years old. live on the north coast of NSW. i will be starting my dreads 17/12/08 here are some before pictures.
my friend will be doing the backcomb method. i surf every week so the salt water should help the dreads lock up yeah?
i bought some dreadheadhq stuff today... shampoo, beads and metal brush. washed my hair with the shampoo this morning, feels purdy.
im still deciding whether to use a tiny bit of wax or not, because a mate at work has dreads and used a bit of wax and they look awesome and dont smell or feel yukky.
I'd strongly advise not using wax, how long has your friend had his dreads for? Sure if you feel you really want to then go for it, but I think if you keep your dreads one day you'll regret it. I know what dreadhead/knottyboy's line is on wax. It holds your hair together while the hair locks. Pure:icon_bs: IMO. It just sticks the hair together/glues it. I used it in the past and totally regretted it some years later when my hair started to stink when it was wet. The bits where there was wax build up took far longer to dry than the parts which were wax free. I also used far less wax than these sites said to and far less frequently. Result was I cut several inches of my dreads off I'm not trying to scare you just telling you how it was for me. You know if you were to use a very small amount and only keep your dreads for say 2-3 years you might never have any problems and wonder what all the fuss about wax is. Like I said I personally don't believe that if you use wax and continue using wax you ever really achieve dreadlocks, just something that looks like them. That's just me though.... Whatever you decide to do, good luck
you may want to do it near the front so you can monitor it better. plus if you sleep on your back the candle stick on your head might mush together with your hair and make a sticky mess. but this is crazy talk, ask any member who used wax and see if they will tell you if they benefited from it. i guess it isn't so bad, at least we'll have another member who will have experience with the stuff to let people know how to deal with it.
im really in 2 minds on the wax, because my folks are really against me getting dreads and the deal is i'll have to cut them out if i look terrible with them, so i think ill have to use a bit of wax just so they look good fast, then hopefully in a few weeks or months ill do a couple of deep clenses and what-not and get as much wax out as possible. what do members on here who have used wax properly say about it?
you can't use wax properly man. what wax does is grab the loose hair and make it stick to the lock, thats it. there are better products you can use that do the same thing. the wax sites changed directions on how much wax to use a couple of times. i think the latest one is to use a m and m's worth on each lock. to begin with, that;s a flawed measurement. if you do the measurement on 4 inch locks and 8 inch locks, the 4 inch will have twice the concentration of the stuff. when i used knotty boy wax, the directions were something like use it to make things look neat, or whenever you think you need it. it totally candle sticked my hair. i cut the locks off, and years later it still has the wax in them, it just doesnt go away. read around man, we already have a thread on the front page here about someone with 3 inch hair having difficulty getting the stuff out, and that's only 1 day! wax builds up inside of the lock, so there are essentially holes in the lock can't go so the hair doesn;t tighten properly. when you take the wax out of that hole, you end up with a frizzy messy thing. frizzy hair is better than smelly hair in my book, but i can understand your situation with your parents wanting you to look "presentable" so instead of caking your hair in the hard stuff, use some pure aloe. it totally smooths out your hair, i dont use it regularly but other members can show you how it works. if you're really bent on using wax on your head, maybe read around what people have went through before you get into the stuff.
Dont use it man. I used it and worst decision ever I used not that much and I still find wax 2 years after stopping the usage . Makes some dreads feel wierd and hard to find sometimes. Got as much out as possible but there is still some up in my dreads. Just use aloe that stuff works charms and easy to use. Just skin the plant and blend it together. Rub like gel works like gel just natural and doesnt build up.
Yeah, again another testimony on not using wax. They don't make things looks neater faster. They don't make dreads look neat at all. The really just make your hair look like tangled hair caked with wax, not dreads. I used wax three or four times and realized it was a scam. It seriously makes your hair slimy and oily. It actually slows the process down significantly. I prevents the hair from moving around and attaching itself to other hair, which is what forms dreadlocks. So while your hair might look better to you for the first couple of weeks, in the end if you wax YOU will be the one cutting your hair. It will ruin it. We have seen it over and over, if you choose not to listen then you will get the lesson the hard way.
ok. 7hrs later. they are born. a few feel as if i slight breeze would pull them apart and ive resisted the urge to use wax as much as possible. i have bands at the roots and tips, how long should i leave them in? or should i get them out now? and take a guess it i used wax or not, judging from the pics. here are some pics.
