I used to love splitting fire but after doing it for 8 years it has become a chore. (we only heat with fire wood and use 6-8 cords a year so that’s a lot of splitting) Anyway wondering what kind of wood you split in Oregon - here it is mostly alder and fir. I think spitting wood is a great physical activity and it’s rewarding because you will be keeping someone warm. Cheers!
Heh, I've split about 3 or 4 cords this summer, most of it being Fir, Oak, and Pine. I have a ton of madrone too, but I have to use a saw for that wood because no matter how hard you try, it just won't split But seriously, if any of you live in Southern Oregon I'd gladly split some wood for ya
Well it kind of sounds like you should go into the fire wood business. (is there a market for that in your area) Also wondering if you have a chain saw – I still kind of love dropping trees and bucking them up. I am pretty proud to say I have been using a chain saw for a long time and I have never had an accident. Cheers!
Chopping wood is a good work out. My dad made me do that shit growin up for 7-8 years. Good skill though, havent met many city people who could swing an axe to save there life.
Heh, funny thing is, I grew up in the city and that's when I started. After moving to Oregon it didn't take my dad long to see that electric heat is an incredibly inefficient method of heating (we never really needed to use the heater back in CA), so we got a really nice woodstove instead Not a big fan of the chainsaw though... I can use it fine, but I don't like it.
Just for laughs I thought I would add a link to a humorous essay I wrote about firewood in adult collage. Cheers! http://johnnystillcantread.sitesled.com/firewood.html
Yeah, my family and I plant a lot of trees. Besides, too much crowding in a forest actually hampers growth and is unhealthy for all the trees. Taking smaller trees out and clearing things up makes for a healthier and happier forest!
