this is not about drugs. i not done crack since 08...haha i have a 4 year old american bull terrier and she is a great dog. ive had her since she left the litter at 7 1/2 weeks... and i don't know when this started but she got attached to rocks.. the ones on the ground, in the dirt, they damn everywhere... whenever she off leash at the house, she wants a damn rock.. if we walking or running, she too curious about other stuff, but at hom... it does not matter. Rocks at least the size of a baseball. In the yard, wherever.. she HAS to have one.. she always trying to get away with this shit... she smart. i cant get her away from them. she wants to carry them and she is proud of it. the problem is, her teeth when she is older. she not chewin on the rocks.. sometimes yeah.. i stop her at anything like that now, i get on her about rocks unless i give her a big one to push around the yard, since its size of bowling ball.. and since i let her.. i cant get her away from rocks because they are everywhere lol.. its the biggest problem with her i cant seem to fix someone else watch her... oh yeah, you know she gonna get a rock.. lol shit
My friend's pit bull is like that. She will dive under water to get a rock. I don't really have any suggestions though. Those damn dogs and their rocks.
maybe you could ask a vet. there might also be some dog-specific forums online you just gotta be glad she's not swallowing rocks. or socks. I've heard of dogs doing that, needing operations that cost $1000's. maybe she might go for a heavy ball or something to replace them

sometimes i wonder if this is a female trait with protecting and needing a child and such, mother instincts, because she was spayed at such a young age... recommended age i was told ... year something i was told.. its just been us two, and lots of dog owners are. them and their dogs. so maybe its a coping mechanism? just a thought
Funny thing is...I really can relate to that dog (and others like her). I LOVE rocks. I literally have thousands of them. Outside, on the patio, on different little walk ways, walls, bordering everything you can think of in a yard, in bowls outside - and inside when I can slip and hide them so I'm not harrassed/embarrassed by visitors. There is even a "set" of rocks I like to bathe with. I have quite a collection of Native American artifacts, and some crystals, gems, etc...but my LOVE for rocks isn't just for the possible monetary value of it. They have to look the right way, appeal to me, etc...but oh my dear...I've managed to find lots and LOTS of rocks that appealed.
ahh a rock-dog, seen it before...heh try playing fetch in a deep clear pool. otherwise i'd say once a rock-dog always a rock-dog
Please Tell Me You Don't Chew On Them And Push Them Around The Yard With Your Cold Wet Nose... Cheers Glen.
Well, as long as she doesn't eat them, it could be a lot worse. You could try narrowing it down to one, and then substituting something else for it. Or try to find what makes her do it, and then substitute directly to something else. Maybe since she doesn't care about them away from home, it is a substitution thing, like you say. I would say try substituting another small animal or puppy, but being a pit, even a good one, I'd feel pretty bad for that small animal... You might consider finding a professional trainer, just for a quick consultation.
