We were housetraining her the past two weeks. We took her out of the bathroom today and she's sick, she won't eat, not even tuna, her favorite. She's making odd meows and is starting to get lethargic. This happened about one or two weeks after we first got her, she was about 6 weeks old. She's about 12 weeks now. She almost died that time... her heart stopped beating. That time she was getting up on the counters and sneaking old food from the sink. We no longer have anything like that for her to get into, and also she hasn't jumped up on the counters anymore. Please help, I don't need another scary night, like the time she almost died...
Do you have any house plants? A lot of times they can be poisonous to kitties, but the kitty doesn't know this and so munches away... You say she was in the bathroom? Do you keep cleaning products in there? Kittens are very curios and some will try to eat just about anything once. Some things taste good to them (like antifreeze), but are very deadly. Also, she might have a condition. Have you taken her to the vet? She sounds kind of young, so she's probably too young to have all of her shots yet, meaning she's vulnerable to bad kitty sicknesses. Is she walking funny or anything like that? Sometimes odd behavior can be as simple as an inner ear infection, but she should still be seen by a doc right away. Good luck! My prayers are with you and your kitty!
You kept her locked in your bathroom??? Do you know how many germs are in there? Have you been feeding her in there? Have you even gotten her immunizations that she needs? I hope she gets better but honestly, did you think you could keep a cat in the bathroom and not expect something(besides litterbox training) to occur? Poor kitty.
My bathroom was fucking clean asshole, she was fine when she was in the bathroom. I don't have any cleaning products in my bathroom, and we fed her like we normally did and spent time with her like we normally did. This is how kittens are trained, often. She didn't get sick until she was out of the bathroom.
I would say get her to a vet and do it today. I have 9 cats and can't stand to watch any of them if they are I'll. As for the above asking if she has had her injections, at least 12 weeks for a kitten otherwise they have no effect and can do more harm than good. I would say though Hunny, keeping a kitten of that age, you say you got her at 6 weeks, way to young to be away from mum to start with. I would only get a kitten if it NEEDED to be rehomed or was in any way being harmed. She might be pining for attention and making herslf I'll over it. Can I ask if your giving her kitten food? I will also say, a kitten or puppy for that matter will eat ANYTHING they can get into their mouths. Tuna for a kitten is a no no I'm affraid. You need to treat her like you would a 12 week old baby and ask yourself, would you feed your 12 week old baby Tuna? I know I wouldn't. Please get that poor little thing to the vets as soon as.
Cats are ANIMALS that live close to the ground and lick themselves in irder to bathe... What kind of germs do you think she's picked up in the bathroom that any other kitten wouldn't get from the rest of the house or the outdoors?? Kittens aren't made to live in bubbles, and there's nothing wrong with confining an animal to one room for a certain period of time to avoid messes during litter box training. I'm sure she's not malnourished, atrophied, or otherwise scarred for life because of this one detail. Nevertheless, a kitten is sick, and if you've ruled out household toxins in the bathroom, honeyhannah, a vet check seems to be in order. Something is indeed off. Good luck!
PS: A lot of vaccines cannot be administered to a kitten until they are at least 6 months old, and even then, some of them require a series of vaccinations and are not immediately effective. You can't just throw a bunch of vaccines at a kitten. It would kill it.
No matter how clean you think your bathroom is....it isn't. It's covered in the bacteria that's in urine and feces. Do you eat in your bathroom? Would you be willing to sit on your bathroom floor, put your dish and fork on the floor, and then eat? You wouldn't even use your damn toothbrush if you you knew about all the bacteria that's on it. And FYI, I have never known anyone who housebroke a cat by keeping them in the bathroom...certainly not a 12 week-old kitten. You sound sadly misguided and that's why your kitten is sick. You are the asshole, not me. I'm not the one locking my pets in a disgusting fecal-infested room just because you don't want your carpets pissed on while your kitten learns to adjust to her new home.
Actually most germs come straight from the toilet. If you flush without closing the lid, germs you do not see fly out of the toilet and can land on everything in your bathroom. If you do close the lid before flushing then it will lessen the fecal germs from your toilet. This is the reason I keep my toothbrush in my bedroom and change it every two months. Anyway, I am surprised that she seemed to take so long to be litter trained. Most kittens get it very quickly as cats are natuarally going to want to go in loose dirt and that is what the litter resembles. No matter what though you should take her to the vet ASAP. Kittens' immune systems are not fully developed and getting sick for them can be worse than a mature cat. Even if nothing is seriously wrong then atleast you will have a vet confirm that for you and go from there. My cat got an abrasion in his eye a few weeks ago and when I got home from work his eye was a bit runny and he was keeping it closed. My mother said "oh it's probably just a little scratch or something. It will be fine tommorow, don't bother to take him to the vet". But of course I took him right away and the vet comfirmed that he has a rather big abrasion and that because I caught it so soon that lessened the likelyhood of any infection and the possiblility of loosing his eye. It's always better to be on the safe side. good luck
All I'm saying is kitty can't be kept in a bubble or she'll never build up a resistance. That's the only reason cats are more resistant to disease than kittens... because they've built up their immune systems by exposing themselves to germs.
cynical who are you a vet??? btw did you go to University to figure that out. Most vets tell you that... Because for YI "if" you put the litterbox in the bathroom, you NEED to let the kiten know exactly where the territory is, or else there will be urine everywhere except the litterbox. So FYI your Wrong. I have 2 cats i know whats right and whats wrong and one of my cats is a grand champion show cat who's been very well trained.. my other goes on the toilet.
No, I'm not a vet but I have worked in a vet clinic for quite some time, and I plan to become a vet assistant in the not-so-distant future. Do you distrust vets or something? Kittens aren't stupid. They can figure out a lot more than you know. Most often they can figure out how to use the litter box without even being shown. At least all of my cats did, and I have 3, soon to be 4, so I guess you could call me the local cat lady. So keep telling me you know all about cats when I've been studying them since I was 7, have always had at least one in my house, have had experience in a clinic, and I'm going to school to learn still more about them. I don't understand how you think putting her in close proximity with the litter box would screw up her perception of her territory. Surely, she wasn't put in there when her eyes were still closed. She knows there's a whole world outside of the bathroom. I don't use the bathroom method, but I don't condemn those who do. Some people don't want cat shit all over their house and no one should tell them that they have to embrace cat shit as a part of their decor if they have a cat. Sounds like PETA propaganda to me...
just because you go to school and "assist" in a clinic doesn't mean you know everything . i'm sure you know alot but thats like me telling you how to treat kids ... not gunna happen. or vice versa. to each their own. How we train is differnt. So however we treat our pet is differnt and if you disagree than oh well. At least the kitten is getting the love and attention he/she needs Right? Right? Peace Out!
I'm very sorry to hear that my kitten who was 8 months old 2 years ago died... i know what your going through. its hard . if you wanna pm me you can . Take care of yourself. PG
CATS ARE NATURALLY ABLE TO BE LITTER BOX TRAINED! IT IS IN THEIR NATURE! IT IS NOT SOMETHING YOU TEACH THEM! Bathroom. Animal neglect. ALMOST DIED? You are not a responsible pet owner. lethargic, odd meows, and youre THAT dense /and or uncaring to take her to the vet? It is people like you who should not be allowed the bonus of owning other lives. edit post: because: i have a bone to pick with the lady below. You can work at a vet clinic , and that means nothing. Wanting to be an assistant, does not mean you are. No vet, or assistant, would ever condone an avoidable death. It was neglectful, and arrogant.. For several, several years I helped in spay/neuters, shot clinics, adoption clinics, rescues, emergencies, etc. And your response is not only uneducated, it is IGNORANT.
