Ok, so I am an atheist, but I'm not here to bash any beliefs or anything. I just want to know- who wrote the book of Genesis exactly? To me, there seems to be kind of a piece missing to the puzzle. If in the beginning, there was only a God, and he created Adam and Eve- then how did the person who wrote the Book of Genesis even know this to begin with? It would only make sense that perhaps Adam wrote this book or Eve would have had to write this book in order for this to make sense. Was there some guy writing this book "Genesis" at the same time that this event was taking place? Anyways, thats just my thoughts on that subject.
This reminds me of the questions I used to ask 6 years ago. I was quite ignorant of much of Christian and all religious trivia. It is traditionally ascribed to Moses (think Charelton Heston in The 10 Commandments). modern Biblical scholarship points towards two authors (or authoring groups) known as J and P (at least Genesis 1-11). J is Jahwist and P is Priestly. They are concerned about different things and have different styles. read Genesis 1 and then Genesis 2. God acts differently, and is called different things. There is more to it than that, but it is pretty simple. With a trained eye you can separate the two strains in the Noah Flood account as well. An ancient redactor compiled it into one set of scripture. This is known as the Documentary Hypothesis. Most Christians will reject it.
Whats interesting is what is in The Book of Jubilees thats not in Genesis (the parts about brothers and sisters gettin it on).
there's another one too...can't remember it right now book of jasher http://www.sacred-texts.com/chr/apo/jasher/1.htm
Yes, so if you go by Creationism we are all inbred, if you go by Darwin we are all hairless monkeys Ahhh, the choices
