I grew up wearing socks 99% of the time so i hardly go barefoot.

I used to go swimming and never ever had a problem showing off my barefeet there, but other then that, i wish not to show.
Recently (because i dont like ppl looking) ive been going barefoot when parents were out working, thats like 10 hours of no socks, it felt great.
Ive been outside barefoot, but at night, and i mean like, 3-4am, even went to the park and such (only 2min walk) Bit sore, but good none the less.

I would love to do it in day time and on pavements etc but i AM too shy to do so because if i get looked at funny, i tend to "spark" off, but i dont mind wearing shoes, either.

I'm known in the family to always wear socks or even shoes most of the time, even if i had a hole in the sock, ill change them, i think i would love going barefoot in public but im happy either way, maybe once im older.

Oh that message! Listen, i admire your courage and how you guys stand up to those who feel its needed to stare, i remember seeing some guy walk barefoot and he looked so relaxed, mum made a joke and even tho the guy didnt hear it, i thought it was wrong, but being known to never go barefoot, i couldnt comment.
So again, i admire you all and wish you a great xmas!

Oh those from the UK (ive been reading messages for the past week) and i felt, even tho im not a barefooter, the need to send the message across and i sent an e-mail to LK today (known morning programme) and asked for a story to be made and informing people of the UK that its healthy etc, i hope it is made!

    take care!

I love going barefoot! There's nothing like it!

I would rather go barefoot than wear shoes.. especially in the summertime! When I was a kid I never wore shoes in the summer. Lol, I remember never wearing shoes into gas stations or stores.. haha they all probably thought I was some dirt poor kid who's parents couldn't afford socks and shoes.. lol, but it sure felt great.. ahh Great Memories.

If you like going barefoot then more power to you!! You shouldn't let your shyness hinder you... Why not just go for it?? You never know until you do it... Good luck!!

thats the problem, i feel like doing it but the shyness is much much stronger, and i wont be able to take it if people comment and stared or something, i would probably retaliate...

Maybe when i go on holiday in a few years :)

Wow, your story is a LOT like mine.

Take you time with it. It took me about a year to muster up the courage to go outside in public barefoot. I made a thread that is sort of a journal/diary of my experiences here: http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167995

I too used to be well-known amongst family and friends to be a compulsive shoe/sock wearer. I moved to a different state at one point and I had neighbors who were barefoot all the time. This idea eventually got to me and made me decide to try it out being I had never done it before.

I have confronted my parents, and they rather strongly disagree. They compromised and said I could go barefoot on sidewalks, but not in the park next door because I can apparently see what I'm stepping in on the sidewalks, but not in the park. They're afraid I'll step on a hidden hypodermic needle left by a careless junkie that has AIDS.

I appreciate their concern, but I strongly disagree.

Good luck, man!! Don't let people think for you and be independent. You'll get there!! :D

Eh... this is like, one of those moments where you think "im gonna do it!" then 5mins later, you bottle it.

I may wait till i get my own place, alot of people know me around the area, the main thing that discourages me of doing this is,

    The hypocritsy of myself
    Stares/comments

I read all 6 pages, and enjoyed it alot, i admire people like yourself who have that courage to do such a thing.
Although, i CAN talk infront of 100s of people, thats one of my strong points.

After the new year, im quitting smoking and going to start personal training, to build mass on my torso and legs, and i probably will try barefooting in the park at like 5am, since it helps making your legs stronger.

Been there, felt that way too, not to worry it's normal.

Yes, it's so much easier to stay safe and do what everyone else does, and that is wear shoes and socks in public. Try and take very small steps, even if it's just stepping outside your home for a moment in broad daylight barefoot. I learned that the sky didn't fall even if someone sees you in barefeet. You might want to try wearing sandals, the beauty of this is your feet are exposed to others yet you are shod at the same time.

Remember, you can either take a step forward into growth, or take a step back into safety.

thats the other thing, i hate sandals, and i mean.... DISPISE them. Although, again, im not the type to say "EW" to someone.

I dont think ill be a full time barefooter, maybe just an hour during training or something, or go to the park and relax...
Or maybe in the future, ill venture out more.

Hey, as long as it does not hurt anyone else, do what makes you happy. You will never have the power to control the thinking of others! Don't compromise your happiness, being miserable won't accomplish a thing.

Well i went outside the door with nothing on my feet, it felt ok, but toooo cold.

I dont think i will go barefoot, im just not THAT mentally strong to think "well, fuck it, who cares" i just cant.

So...Wish you all a great xmas and i probably wont come here much, it will only add to my hatred for this nations ignorance.

    Take care all.

Dude, I had the same problem at age 18 too. You can't expect to change overnight, give it time. Try it next year when things warm up, meanwhile don't be so hard on yourself.

Come back when you start to gain more confidence, we'll all still be here....barefoot!

    Yep.

Don't worry if you just can't do it this time. I had plenty of those moments. I used to be a major shoddie! It's going to take a while, you have to develop thick skin mentally and physically. It took me over a year!

I had to go out tonight, and whilst walking i did imagine wearing no shoes (although, its around 0 degrees (30 F in usa terms) and even with that, my stomach churned.

I wouldn't recommend going barefoot when it's that cold. That just wouldn't be fun.

I'd wait until it's 60 or 70 before trying it for the first time. It was about 60 when I first tried it.
