i think that nasa is the most pointless use of money the government spends on (other then the drug war obviosly). can anyone honestly say that their life has improved b/c we have the ability to land on the moon? the only real benifits nasa has had to society is velcro and tang. i think that studying planets is useless information also. lets say we kno evrything their is to kno about jupiter.. wat are we goin to do w/ the information.. NOTHING at all. In fact, the whole reason we even started the whole space thing in the 50s and 60s was just to prove that we could beat russia to it and to prove that we had the ability to do it, not for the scientific value of it. Even if u think that nasa is a good idea, think of this: couldnt the money we spend on nasa be spent better by helping starving people around the world and helping fight AIDS?
Deadhead, please don't ever use T.V, cell phones, the internet, gps systems, or any modern technology ever again.
Hurricane warnings, remote medical sensing and the automatic defibrilator should be added to the list. OH yes, the lubricant that is now used on all semi-truck was also develped by NASA.
People who don't know the difference between "their" and "there", and "then" and "than" don't deserve to comment on what the government spends money on. Perhaps you are right, the education system needs some funding.
despite your obvious defects in grammer, you have made good point: everything that NASA has pointed out, in the way of useful knowledge, has already been made clear by spiritual teachers from ages past until today. and in a way that is much more useful, btw/
Deadhead, I totally agree with you about this. I've thought for a long time that NASA was a huge waste of time and money. Exactly what have we as a country gained by being able to land on the moon? Nothing, aside from being able to say that we can. Our space program may have given us an advantage over most of the world at one point; however, this is no longer relevant and probably not even true anymore. "We can land on the moon and you can't".....yeah......
He has a point, it's a lot of money just to float people around in space, and though some useful knowledge is gained (and a lot of technology that is not necessarily useful, though popular), that money could be better spent, the time could be better spent too, instead of creating neat consumer toys or further complexifying the world, we could be getting in touch with our spiritual selves and actually helping others. That said, of course the world as it is has come about thanks in large part to NASA. The technologies people have named are indeed developed by them. But, cool as they are, and useful as they seem to be, they aren't always necessary (aside from the medical advances, which I have no argument against, except that if we lived healthier to begin with they wouldn't be as necessary). We could live without cell phones and GPS, and the time and money spent researching and developing these things could have been used finding practical answers to major problems faced here on earth. And by the way, if an asteroid the size of Texas is heading for us, we're doomed, and there's not a thing that NASA can do about it. For starters, they're only watching a fraction of the sky at any given time, it'd be easy to miss the asteroid, expecially if it came "out of the sun"; that is, if it came out of the daylight side of earth, we'd never see it till it was too late.
The problem with NASA is it doesn't get enough money. I find it a shame when there's a whole god damn universe out there and people don't wanna explore it. Also like someone else said, when there's an asteroid the size of texas heading for Earth, you're gonna be asking NASA where's its plan to get rid of it. If you think we know were all the near-earth asteroids are, you are sadly mistaken, we know less then 5% of them. And it will only take an asteroid about 5 miles in diameter to destroy life as we know it. NASA in the 90's asked congress for $50 million to try to find and track all near earth asteroids, congress refused. The movie Deep Impact cost $75 million to make. on March 23, 1989 the 1,000-foot diameter Apollo asteroid 4581 Asclepius (1989 FC) missed the Earth by 400,000 miles passing through the exact position where the earth was only 6 hours before. If the asteroid had impacted it would have created the largest explosion in recorded history.
it is really sad that people believe exploration is a waste of time. Might i remind you that we live on a continent that was FOUND by exploration? Knowledge is never a waste of money. We need more NASA, not less.
LMFAO! velcro and tang and hundreds of other technological advantages you twit. Anyone saying NASA is pointless just doesn't know shit. I laugh at every single person sitting on their PC's posting on this message board who agrees with this lame-o. The money we use to wage war and to put people like me through the court system for drogas could be used to help some starving people. And as far as the hiv/aids go, 1. wear a fucking condom, 2. don't fuck random people if you're concerned, or 3. go exchange your needle at the needle exchange program.
