National Coming Out Day is October 11th. Does anyone have plans? Anyone going to come out to anyone that day?

I'm already out to everyone but I still plan on spending the day with my other gay and lesbian friends. Perhaps go out to our local gay bar and grab a bite to eat and have a drink. I might see if the University has anything going on that I could help with. Passing out information or something like that.

    What about you?

If I'm finally certain by then , than I will.

I really hope I will be. Confusion hasn't been the best part of the last 5 years

National Coming Out Day? I've never heard of it and I'm gay - what are the chances that straight people will have heard of it? Why October 11? What's the significance of the date?

To answer your question about why Oct 11th here is part of an email I got sent my the HRC:

This year will also mark an important hallmark as National Coming Out Day, falls on the 20th anniversary of the 1987 Gay and Lesbian March on Washington, and the unfurling of the AIDS Quilt on the National Mall. The very first National Coming Out Day was celebrated a year to the day later as a way of continuing the spirit of openness, honesty and visibility that the March and the AIDS Quilt presentation inspired.

Around here National Coming Out Day is heard of. There are bars that celebrate, University gay/lesbian clubs are always around handing out information or having some kind of event, there are gay film fests, all sorts of stuff. I know its a big thing in the gay community but i'm not so sure about any straight people knowing about it.

    The email also said this:

National Coming Out Day is a time to celebrate openness and honesty whether you came out 20 minutes ago, or 20 years ago this is a time for all Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Straight supportive people to Talk About It with friends, family and coworkers

I had planned to come out to my parents last week but I received an unfortunate phonecall regarding my grandmother's detereorating health. It appears she doesn't have much longer to live so I put it off to avoid any added stress to my parents' lives. Maybe things will cool down by Oct. 11 and I'll do it then.
