I just thought I would see if anyone else has had any experiences with navy boot camp and to be more specific- ship 17?

I know if you are medically discharged you don't get to go home right away. They send you to a place called ship 17 where you stay for 14-30 days.

It can be even longer than 30 days if they lose your paperwork or if you are a special case.

I think special cases are usually people with physical conditions(307's) and not so much for mental conditions(311's).

Well I don't think the way they do things is right. They take a bunch of mentally ill people and stick them in a room for 3 more weeks when instead they should be sent home.

I guess they do it as a form of punishment for not making it but it doesnt do any good. It makes you go more insane.

You also get sick right away because there is between 120-200 people depending on the time of year. Summertime is closer to the 200.

In a regular division you are less likely to get sick since it is just 88 people in one room.

The government doesnt really care that they are doing this to people who have been diagnosed by the psychologists with having a mental disorder.

They should be sent home immediately and the paperwork can be done by the navy or the recruiting station back at home. Then it can be sent to the person back at their home.

Oh yeah there is legal house too which is for people who failed the drug test when they got to boot camp or who got in a fight with someone. The ones who failed the drug test should be sent home right away too since they are of no use to the navy.

legal house has to wait the 3 weeks as well.

307's should have to wait since the navy is liable for sending them early and the people who got in a fight can wait since they are idiots and chose to fight, but send the 311's home.

Oh yeah i forgot to also tell about how they pick people randomly to go home. It doesnt matter when u got to ship 17. Someone who got there a week later than you could go home well before you. Its a fucked up system.

    Government doesnt make any sense.

Why did you join up? Joining the military is something all young people should think about long and hard.

If they cut you, they probably did it because... unless you ask for a discharge they see you as a disruption. You signed an oath, they have control...the biggest reason not to join.

Ya I didn't think of it that way. It is a contract that is hard to break. You can't just say you want to quit, you have to either: a) have a mental condition b) physical condition c) get in a fight with someone d) fail the drug test upon arrival.

There are very few cases when you can just voluntarily quit. Yeah its not worth it to give up your freedom for them. For one the food is horseshit and you have to wait in line for the food.

You give up your right to eat good food!

I didn't think the military would suck so much. I didnt expect to get fuckin inspections on how you make a bed. That is retarded. I can see doing the running and pushups but the other stuff is pointless.

I can see making a bed but not with the 45 degree corners and shit. Fuck just making a bed tucked in should be good enough. People overemphazise dumb shit these days.

It doesn't sound like you had any idea what you were getting into. All of that little bullshit is for the purpose of learning attention to detail and following orders and instructions. Yes bullshit as it may be the process works to turn an individual into an order following, military pawn. If they made it easy to quit in basic training how many people do you think would finish bootcamp?

Don't want to put up with the bullshit, don't sign up.

I was prepared to do what was expected but I got fed up with it after a few weeks, you wouldnt know since u didnt go there. Dont say anything until you try it is all I can say.

I thought effort would be good enough but they still picked on me. I was the center of attention. It was always me they picked on.

I didnt know what to take serious but they said if i didnt do something( not going to specify here) that i would be kicked back to P days.

Maybe it wasnt serious, maybe it was. I dont care either way I wasnt going to fuckin spend more than 8 weeks in boot camp. I figured theyd keep kicking me back, so it wasnt worth it.

I have a life I am not going to spend it in boot camp constantly being kicked back for dumb shit.

If i got to week 5 or 6 and then had to go to ship 17 that would be worse since then it is another 3 weeks to go home.

If i put up with 5 weeks id want to leave right away.

You dont know what it is like feeinalaska so dont talk u dumb mother fucker.

You didnt go through it so all i can say is shut the fuck up.

My chief on ship 17 said at least u guys tried. He said not to take any shit from people who talk shit about us not making it like u dumb idiots.

At least i tried, most of u fucks couldnt even do that much.

Hey well alot of it is bs and well it isnt for everyone. I dont think folding and ironing clothes is really neceassary. Neither is inspecting bunks and inside your racks. That is a waste of time. Pt, swimming and marching should be all you have to do.

I can see doing the written tests but the rest is bs. I didnt join to fold shirts and iron. This isnt home ec class is it? F.T.N. Im sure u know what that means.

Then you have no idea what the military is all about. What with all that flag waving patriotistm and bowing to your heroism, then yes this is for you, but know anything about the military, and if you aren't willing to give up who tells you what underwear to wear and when, or how, then you should go to work for MacDonald's.

More important they tell you who to pull the trigger on. You have no free will, you sold it!

Heros, our military aren't heros, they are hired assassins that will be left high and dry by the VA, and our government when this war is ever over. They bought you for little or nothing, they don't feel you'll ever stand up and ask for what was contracted. Hell that contract will fade into obscurity, and you will be left injured with your family with no recourse.

Hey bet the independent contractors have more protections than our servicemen.

Yeah i gave up my right to eat good food. The military gives you whatever they want and they are racially biased. What if i was asian and wanted to join but be able to eat rice with every meal?

That is fucked up because they dont serve rice all the time, neither do they serve fish. Theyd rather make you eat nasty and less healthy redmeat which they serve pretty often.

No-one knows here unless they have been. I do not know personally, I do know a cousin that went, he went to boot camp in chicago, and it was hell from what I hear. I remember we was down for their graduation. And we got to go eat and visit with them, and my mom gave my cousin a peice of gum, and it turned out one of the sargents or whatever was eathing where we went to, and he chewed my cousins ass out in middle of the restauraunt.

Another one for the whiners forum. I had to make my bed a certain way, I had to follow orders, they don't cook like mommy does...
One good reason to join at a time like this is if you believe the war is right. If you do, you will fight your way through the BS and become a fine sailer.
One good reason to get out, you do not believe the war is right, and you become a consciences objector.
Your first mistake was thinking it would be easy, your second not having a good reason to be there.
I joined in 1986, served four years, got the hell out. I no longer believed in the reasons that I had to join. But at no time did I whine about making my bed, taking cold showers (on deployment), and keeping all things "regulation". That is military, you should know that going in.
You would have my sympathy if you told us you left because you did not want to kill others, or if you felt that the president was lying to you. But you complain of the regs and rules that have been used for over a hundred years.
    Time to grow up.

This forum is close to the top on google search results for "Ship 17" so this thread will probably never die. I just came in to post because I felt like it. There are a lot of insane 311s who claim to be sane and then there are a few sane 311s. I am a sane 311, lol.

I was about two weeks from graduation before I bailed the Navy. I joined for the wrong reasons and thought long and hard while in bootcamp about my decision to join the military. I joined because I was having trouble finding a job and I had low self-esteem and was pretty damn fat. That's right, with all that I still got recruited... I'm glad I was recruited because bootcamp changed my life. I tried my best in bootcamp and when they got me to where I always wanted to be I ended up bailing on them for a better civilian life. I lost 25 pounds and got a nice chunk of change. :D I felt I would waste my life in the Navy at that point and I wanted to be back with my family. I bitched and complained for 3 days about stress and all this lame BS before they finally let me see a shrink to let me out. I was ripped apart by the entire chain of command, lol. A senior Chief knew I was bein' a big baby and told me straight to my face that he wanted to kick my ass like in the old days. It was a fight for freedom though. I was going home no matter what.

I felt so weird about doing what I did. I was so out of place. I felt like a trader. Ship 17/Seperations was harder than bootcamp for me. I cried the first few days and I was so upset that I was in there with crazy people, lol. The way we half-assed everything but pretended to be a respectable division was hard on me. After a few days though the hardest part was just waiting for my time to get out. I was only in there for like 17 days so I was lucky. This was only a few weeks ago that I got back home from that place.

Bootcamp isn't that hard. Following their orders isn't that bad. They only yell at you the first few weeks really before they start treating you with respect. I laughed my ass off when I got yelled at. I have a sick sense of humor so I thought what they said was funny. I tried to hold it in but it was obvious. It's part of the test to see if they can break you. I never cried about that but I did act like a shit head and they still let me stay in my division. I was disrespectful all the time to shipmates but never my petty officers and I fucked up the deck log to get out of doing watch and shit. I loved the division though and I liked military life but I thought about my future and all the things I would miss out and be behind on when I got out so I bailed near the end.

The food isn't that bad. I liked it. It wasn't a $20+ meal but it was better than school food. They usually have a rather large selection of quality food and with the salad bar you can get as much as you want. :) Gotta pass that damn PFA though!

The best part of seps is being a pig in the galley but I restrained myself till my last day because I plan to keep my new body.

I really miss my petty officers and a few people from my division. :(

They made me go home on a train. The train ride was an all nighter. Amtrak is not very safe at night. People get their shit stolen while they are asleep and then people can get off late at night with the goods. Four people got their shit stolen in the car I was in. Then they dropped me off in the middle of nowhere from a bus ride to my city with some crazy ass folk. That upset me.

I just got a job so I hope all is well now. The job isn't something I would want to be doing 2 years from now but at least it's something. I'm going to have to start a new fight, a fight for my future. Looking out for #1 again. :)
