Any statement can only be a partial exposition of Truth, and most statements lend themselves to interpretations which are ignorant. The rational mind or the intellect is incapable of making an absolute formulation of the truth. Hence all this yogic emphasis on quieting the mind. The real jnana or spiritual knowledge is not a linguistic proposition or set of propositions, but a different mode of knowing.
thank you bill... that was beautiful... i hope we live close to each when we get to heaven as you're a pretty cool guy... maybe if we ever get some time off from singing hymns of praise or whatever we're supposed to do up there, we can take some time and go golfing
I haven't set out to research this, but over the years I've heard a lot about it, and also contrary things have come to my attention, like for example ISKCON's rejection of evolution in favour of their own brand of creationism. The thing is that often I've heard it said that the vedas speak of things like micro-biology and quantum mechanics, but whenever I've asked to be shown the actual evidence or verses concerned, it usually amounts to some kind of very wide statement which can be taken in a number of ways, and is probably only interpreted as science because we know from modern matarial science about these things. I'm not close-minded on this, but I remain unconvinced until I see the actual evidence. With things such as biology though, it presents a number of problems if we say that in ancient times there was knowledge of cells, bacteria etc. For one thing, prior to the invention of the microscope in the 19th century, it's hard to see how anyone could have even done any research, and if they did know, then why didn't they use their knowledge to prevent and cure disease. Instead, it's often put down to wholly other and non-scientific causes, something which among many 'new-agers' seems to be making a return. Also there is another aspect of this: the ancient Greeks too spoke of atoms, and believed them to be the basic building blocks of matter (something science no longer holds to be true). They didn't come to this via any kind of scientific process, but through philosophical reasoning. But their concept of the atom is very different from that of the scientist, and really I doubt anyone would argue that they knew very much about it on any kind of objective level. Certainly it doesn't mean they knew what science knows.
You see this is the problem with these people and it is that they try to make the scriptures pliable to our current scientific understanding, but they themselves don't understand that it is completely unnecessary to do so. Science is based on experimental knowledge and some of the things that were taken to be absolute in science were later on proven to be not so absolute and things that were true at one point in time , where completely wrong later on. Why take the scriptures and try to interpret them? why not go by one's own spiritual discipline and finally see the truth for themselves?
Actually it looks like he is saving himself more than he is trying to save you, quite frankly he does not care what happens to us, if he is a true hare krishna who is chanting the names of the lord, he really does not care about you.
Prabhupada said a devotee is 'a friend to all'. He also syas a true devotee will go even into hell to save souls if necessary. Now, I don't subscribe to this ISKCON path, but let's give credit where it's due. Krishna devotees do think they're trying to help others. And they do a certain amount to spread the word - I find it hard to believe that's all done from selfish motives.
ditto to Bill and this is the philosophy of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu that this robert deniro look-alike devotee is practicing Sri Siksastaka of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu 1 Glory to the sri-krsna-sankirtana, which cleanses the heart of all the dust accumulated for years and extinguishes the fire of conditional life, of repeated birth and death. This sankirtana movement is the prime benediction for humanity at large because it spreads the rays of the benediction moon. It is the life of all transcendental knowledge. It increases the ocean of transcendental bliss, and it enables us to fully taste the nectar for which we are always anxious.2 O my Lord, Your holy name alone can render all benediction to living beings, and thus You have hundreds and millions of names, like Krsna and Govinda. In these transcendental names You have invested all Your transcendental energies. There are not even hard and fast rules for chanting these names. O my Lord, out of kindness You enable us to easily approach You by Your holy names, but I am so unfortunate that I have no attraction for them.3 One should chant the holy name of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street; one should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige, and should be ready to offer all respect to others. In such a state of mind one can chant the holy name of the Lord constantly.(Caitanya-caritâmrita, Antya-lîlâ 20.21)4 O almighty Lord, I have no desire to accumulate wealth, nor do I desire beautiful women nor do I want any number of followers. I only want Your causeless devotional service, birth after birth. 5 O son of Maharaja Nanda (Krsna], I am Your eternal servitor, yet somehow or other I have fallen into the ocean of birth and death. Please pick me up from this ocean of death and place me as one of the atoms at Your lotus feet.6 O my Lord, when will my eyes be decorated with tears of love flowing constantly when I chant Your holy name? When will my voice choke up, and when will the hairs of my body stand on end at the recitation of Your name?7 O Govinda! Feeling Your separations I am considering a moment to be like twelve years or more. Tears are flowing from my eyes like torrents of rain, and I am feeling all vacant in the world in Your absence.8 I know no one but Krsna as my Lord, and He shall remain so even if He handles me roughly by His embrace or makes me brokenhearted by not being present before me. He is completely free to do anything and everything, for He is always my worshipful Lord, unconditionally.
Alternative translation by Prabhavananda/Isherwood: Chant the Name of the Lord and His Glory unceasingly That the mirror of the heart may be wiped clean And quenched that mighty forest fire, Worldly lust, raging furiously within. Oh Name, stream down in moonlight on the lotus-heart, Opening its cup to knowledge of Thyself. Oh self, drown deep in the waves of His bliss, Chanting His Name continually, Tasting His nectar at every step, Bathing in His Name, that bath for weary souls. Various are Thy Names, Oh Lord, In each and every Name Thy power resides. No times are set, no rites are needful for chanting of Thy Name, So vast is Thy mercy. How huge then, is my wretchedness Who find, in this empty life and heart No devotion to Thy Name! Oh my mind! Be humbler than a blade of grass, Be patient and forbearing like the tree, Take no honour to thyself, Give honour to all, Chant unceasingly the Name of the Lord. Oh Lord and Soul of the universe, Mine is no prayer for wealth or retinue, The playthings of lust or the toys of fame; As many times as I may be reborn Grant me, Oh Lord a steadfast love for Thee. A drowning man in this world’s fearful ocean Is Thy servant, Oh Sweet One. In Thy mercy Consider him as dust beneath Thy feet. Ah, how I long for the day When, chanting Thy Name, the tears will spill down From my eyes, and my throat will refuse to utter Its prayers, choking and stammering with ecstacy, When all the hairs of the body will stand erect with joy! Ah, how I long for the day When an instant’s separation from Thee, Oh Govinda, Will be as a thousand years, When my heart burns away with its desire And the world, without Thee is a heartless void. Prostrate at Thy feet let me be, in unwavering devotion, Neither imploring the embraces of Thine arms, Nor bewailing the withdrawal of Thy presence Though it tears my soul asunder. Oh Thou, who stealest the hearts of Thy devotees, Do with me what Thou wilt – For Thou art my heart’s beloved, Thou and Thou alone. Sri Chaitanya (1485 – 1533)
Surely you know better than to judge Hinduism by the ways and words of ISKCON. Well, I don't claim in depth knowledge about it, I don't know sanskrit well enough for that. But I find it quite plausible. For one who has discovered oneness with the creator of all things, the vapid daily conundrums of science cannot be hidden. Transcendental eyes can know anything. Science can only go so far, as proved by Heisenburg.
Although I agree that science can't compare to the knowledge one can gain from mystical experience... science is very useful to working out the details of things... and I feel beyond a doubt, that science proves mystical truths. It was just a matter of time, and ulimately there is no time and space, but that is another argument for another time... so as i was saying it was a matter of time before God (Amit Goswami) proved God (one conciousness) through God (quantum mechanics) using God (sciencitific conclusions that resolved paradoxes in quantum mechanics) so he could convince God (scientists) to start God (a new science) based around God (conciousness being oneness of all, only consciousness) for God (people) to use God (science) to discover more about God (the world) from God (the new science) based in God (consciousness) God is all! and beyond beyond beyond! What a cosmic joke! I'm curious if you heard of this Amit Goswami, who is attempting to present Quantum Mechanics in a way that proves that it's all one consciounsess in Self Aware Universe, I feel what he says fits perfectly with yoga and mystic hinduism (not fundementalist hinduism) as well as mysticism of all the other religions and sects. And the one conciousness as I know it. He draws parrels to it, and unites all the traditions, into the supreme truth of conciousness, a oneness of it, that is the ground of all being. Thus the creator and the creation are one! And describing life/death things, like reincarnation in Physics of the Soul, in a way that he is unquestionable proof.
In this case, it's not ISKCON alone who reject evolution and come up with spurious arguments to 'prove it'. I don't think spiritual enlightenment give knowledge of the same order as science. It's clear enough that before 19th century, none of the illuminati of this world knew anything about bacteria as cause of disease for instance. Nor did they know about particle physics or the mechanisms of reproduction. If they did know about bacteria, then they did mankind a great diservice by not speaking out clearly.
