:) if a red-headed child's hair can dread, anyone can have dreadlocks! I'm gonna scream the next time someone says to me "I tried to make my hair do that, and it just wouldn't" and when I ask them how long they had them, "Oh, I combed them back out after a couple weeks" :H

just in the few days since I took these photos, about half of those loose hairs have combined with existing dreads. it's like progress finally started happening at four months, and now at nearly five months, we're really seeing some results!

hahaha I'm always the one behind the camera!! LOL My hair is not dready, it is long and purple, though. I might have some pics from when I first colored it back in September...

this is the only one I didn't delete off photobucket

the color has since faded to a bright pinkish-purplish and the natural brown, in stripes. It comes down to my waist, and is naturally a very dark brown color.

That's part of what makes it so cool - her awesome daughter actually decided she likes the way it looks, rather than just wanting to look like someone else.

Her locks are looking great, coming along real nice! Keep some beads in there, and move 'em around weekly or so - that'll help them tighten up more. Thanks for posting these, I was really curious about how they were looking these days (ain't nothin' cuter than a little cutie with dreadies!). Your hair looks awesome, too, by the way. Do you keep it dyed, or was the purple a one-time thing? For years when I was a kid, I kept my hair about an inch long, just so I could continuously dye it as many times as I wanted with minimal hassle. The last time I dyed it was just before letting it dread... Good times!

That's awesome :) How does your daughter feel about her dreads? Sometimes people get them and then regret it. Does she still feel as strongly about 'em as she did when she first wanted them?

Wow, give those a few years and they'll be amazing. What an awesome little girl you have :)

These are great! I saw a family with dreads. The dad had long thick dreads, the mom had thinner dreads, and the two boys both had dreads. YOu can tell they had had them since they could grow hair. The little *little* one's hair was very fine but dreaded just fine. It was the only time I had seen kids with dreadlocks (except for your little one)

Thanks for posting these pics! Both your kids are adorable.

I usually have waist-length hair, but about every four years or so I get bored with it and do something different. last time, when I was pregnant with the little one, I had two feet of hair cut off (it was still shoulder length when they got done with it), donated it to locks of love, and liked it at first, but it wasn't long before I started missing my hair. So this time, when I got bored with my hair, I bleached hell out of it and dyed it purple! :) I touched it up once since I originally dyed it. I used Special Effects hair dye, which doesn't wash out like Manic Panic does. It faded to a bright hot pink color, still purplish in the places where I managed to bleach more of the natural color out, though. I have another bottle of the dye, and it should keep my hair purple for another year or so... :)

mama, your girlie and her dreads are looking gorgeous! I've got fine red hair too, and I'm having a hard time right now with the dreading. gave up completely on backcoming and have been letting my hair do its own thang for a month or so, and it's making a bit of progress but normally just looks horrific. but seeing your little girl's dreads is very encouraging :)

Your daughter is really pretty. It's really cool that she decided that on her own! How does she like it so far?

She recently turned five. She loves her dreads, and is very proud of them. It's a very big deal to her that her hair expresses her individuality. The concept of conformity is foreign to her. :)

that's what we had to do, too. Just stop with the backcombing and let her hair do it's own thing. As soon as we did that, her hair finally started knotting up real good, like all of a sudden. I did use a variation of the twist n rip method on a few stubborn places that refused to even start to knot up on its own, and that worked much better than backcombing, just didn't look as good at first. Palmrolling with a bit of salty water helps a lot, too, when she'll let me mess with it.
