Rudolf Elmer, the Swiss Banking whistleblower will hand Wikileaks information on bank accounts of 2,000 "high net worth individuals" and corporations who he claims are involved in tax evasion. That number includes about 40 politicians from countries around the world.

Mr. Elmer is due in Swiss court in two days to answer charges that he violated Swiss banking privacy laws. He will hand over the files to Wikileaks before he goes to court. It's not clear if or when Wikileaks will publish this information. Wikileaks already has information on 15 individuals from Mr. Elmer's files but has yet to publish any of it.

Wow. If this goes on, Wikileaks might turn out to be the wake up call we so desperately need in these oppressive times.

I'd say it already has been. I'm not sure why anyone would choose to sleep through all of this.

In that article, Assange say he expects it to take around two weeks or so to vet the info, possibly longer, and he'll release it as soon as its been vetted.

BTW, I thought the whole purpose of Wikileaks was to keep the sources anonymous. In this case the source has not only been identified and come forward, he's already been charged with a related crime. So why doesn't he just release it all to the world wide media or the world wide web? Why give it to Wikileaks? He doesn't need their protection anymore...

Not everything "leaked" need go to Wikileaks. Hell, I'd publish any leaks that came my way... And I probably wouldn't bother to vet it. I'd let the public see it all... :)

Well that is what happens when you give rich people huge tax breaks.

They're still scummy cheating motherfuckers. When was the last time we had a good old class war?

We've been in one for decades. Maybe as long as humans have been around. It's just that we usually lose. Their overwhelming amount of purloined riches "they" have, guarantees it.

I just heard from one source that several of the names in this latest leak are those of mobsters, gangsters and other underworld figures. I guess we'll get to see just how courageous Julian Assange is.

I was thinking about that as well, when the it was questioned why the guy who was leaking the information was doing so openly.

There are bound to be some serious organised criminals involved in this, and if they get their cover blown I wouldn't want to be in Assange's shoes...

If Wikileaks continues to release stuff the way it has (slowly, thoughtfully, with current events in mind), it could become the most powerful organization on the planet.

You do realize that information/knowledge is power in this world, right?

With Wikileaks ending up with so much critical information on so many powerful individuals and companies and gov'ts, it stands to leverage that into power for Wikileaks to manipulate and control what happens to that info and those people & organizations.

Now if Wikileaks lives up to its mission it will only use that info to advance the goals and needs of the PEOPLE of the planet.

But we all know how power corrupts. This kind of power has never been achieved before on such a global scale. Perhaps within a country their security apparatus or mafia might have info on a national level, but this is now nearly unprecedented amount of info and power coming to one organization.

I wonder if Julian gave us a show of how such power can be abused when he allegedly took advantage of a couple of women in Sweden (I don't really call it anything other than "taking advantage" of a situation).

But I can see where the temptations will get even greater for Julian and Wikileaks to leverage their power to their own advantage rather than for the greater good...

Let's hope Julian keeps his act together and doesn't turn into a megalomaniac...

the whole thing IS organised crime... (ofcourse not all in there are criminals, but those that aren't have their hands tied and their public voices silenced to a large/HUGE degree, either by the media or by trumped up charges, fines and prison sentences)... some of you don't seem to get that quite... i know it's difficult... have problems staying awake to the harsh reality myself...

Kind of makes you wonder what the sense in announcing this cable several weeks before it is actually published.

People with this kind of money will no doubt also have the power to have any trace of their investment deleted from file when they withdraw it.

On a side note, I wonder if this guy has any involvement in the bombing of the German Bakery last year? I only just found out about it recently, don't always follow the news that closely. Spent a lot of time there in 2002. The second place in India that has been bombed since I was there :(

Funny how there has been nothing since this..

If you were going to have a swiss bank account, would you open an account in your name? I don't know, I'm asking. It would seem reasonable to think that you might also fake an identity.

Maybe they've looked through the data at wikileaks central and gone- no idea who any of these people are... nope, never heard of them...

Is anyone else getting the feeling that this whole stunt might have been an attempt to discredit the whole wikipedia thing by passing on false information, and the reason we haven't heard anything is because the peeps at wiki have sussed this out?

Uh, Julian specifically stated it would take at least two weeks to sort thru it.

And I can see they are very busy leaking shit about Egypt right now.

Don't worry, the bankers will get their due...
