What is your opinion on these No Kill shelters? I am not so sure they are the best thing...heres why. I recently saw a documentary type film on HBO, some of you may have seen it. It was called (Im pretty sure) "Shelter Dogs" which pointed out how although no kill shelters dont kill the animals, it may not be the best thing for these animals, many of which will never get adopted (old dogs, etc) to live their entire lives in the confines of a kennel constantly surround by barking and noise, which puts alot of stress on the dog. Besides that, they are basically living their lives in a cage. Dog's show their stress by "spinning" which is where they pace in circles over and over....by jumping up and down onto the kennel......to me it just seems more cruel to make a dog live in those conditions for a *long* period of time...especially a dog that has little hope for adoption. I have always kind of felt this way but I always hear people talking positivley about no kill shelters. Personally, when I adopt a dog I am going to look for an older dog that maybe has not many chances of finding a good home. Anyway, I wanted everyone's opinion on the issue since I have been thinking about it quite a bit lately........Anyone else see "shelter dogs"? What did you think?
I'd have to agree with you. It's really sad, but a dog left like that goes insane. Dogs are social creatures, they need to be with 'their people' and to keep them in a kennel for years doesn't help them. If a dog is in a foster home, thats different, they get more interaction with the world. What I don't get is why people keep breeding. Someone I know was complaining to me about all the adorable puppies she sees turned into the pound, but can't see what is wrong with her breeding her dog.
I didn't see the show. I don't think it humane for a dog to live it's Life as yall describe, better to put it down if there's no real Hope of adoption. What do the shelters do w/terminal conditions like untreated heartworms? Breeders? There are sincere/knowledgeable Breeders. There are also ignorant/dumb/greedy Breeders. Like other parts of the US, we have a large problem w/'puppy mills' down here. Prolly best let unsaid what I think should happen to the folks than own/run them....
I'm sorry, but I don't understand why it is fair to condemn a living being to die just because no one has adopted it. Since when did humans get the right to decide whether a life is worth living. Think about it this way: Many children have been orphaned because of the tsunami and some will probably not be adopted into foster homes for years, if at all. Do we kill off the unwanted children just because their life sucks? They are just as unwanted, living in pitiful conditions, probably half-insane from grief. Of course we don't kill off unwanted children, we help them. I don't understand why this can't be true of our animal friends? Why can't we help them, instead of killing them? I think "no kill" shelters are a step in the right direction.
I do see your point. But I don't think it really has to do with deciding whether or not the dog's life is worth living....IMO all dog's lives are worth living and they should all have the chance to be with a great family, but that unfortunatley isn't the case today and I just don't think keeping a dog in a kennel surrounded by constant barking and hardley any human contact. love or proper excersize (atleast not as much as they need to be getting) is right for them either. I think that's cruel. But I also have seen (undercover video) and heard horror stories about how some dogs are disposed of. It's sickening what some kennels do. I am in total favor of foster homes, I think they are wonderful. I hope to able to do it someday when I am in a position to. I also think puppy mills should be banned....I don't see how we can have laws in this country that protect animals, yet they are still allowed to be produced like objects or products and of course we have all seen (on tv Im sure) the horror of what a puppy mill is. And well, the same goes for the millions of farm animals being kept in factory farms and slaughter houses, but that's another thread.
WELL ME PERSONALLY I THINK WE NEED THEM. I DID FOSTER FOR 10 YRS AND WITHOUT THESE SHELTERS WHERE WOULD MY FOSTERS HAVE BEEN?? IN MY STATE MOST NO KILL SHELTERS ARE ALL VOLUNTEER BASED AND THE ANIMALS LIVE IN OUR HOMES, WITH OTHER VOLUNTEER HOMES. THE SHELTERS YOU SPEAK OF ARE VERY FEW.........AND MOST DOGS DO GET PLACED. I THINK ITS WRONG TO PUT DOWN ANIMALS, BUT IN OUR STATE WE HAVE HUMANE SOCIETYS 2 THAT I KNOW OF FOR SURE AND PROABLY MANY MORE, THAT DONT TELL YOU THAT AFTER 2 WKS OF BEING ON THE FLOOR MOST DOGS ARE PUT DOWN DUE TO LACK OF SPACE. NO KILL IS NEVER STATED AND MOST PEOPLE WHO SURRENDER THERE DOGS ARENT AWARE OF THIS. I HAVE SPENT YRS ADOPTING ANIMALS OUT OF THOSE FECILITYS WHEN THERE 2 WKS IS UP......JUST SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE A CHANCE AT A REG LIFE. PLACES LIKE LAST HOPE AND SANCTUARY PLUS R FOSTER CARE BASED HOMES AND SAVE SO MANY ANIMALS FROM BEING PUT DOWN BECAUSE THEY R NO KILL SHELTERS.IN FAMILY HOMES. WE NEED THESE SHELTERS WITHOUT THEM THERE WOULD BE NOONE TO HELP SAVE THESE BELOVED ANIMALS. WITHOUT THEM THERE WOULD BE MORE KILLED EVERY YR DUE TO LACK OF SPACE..... WE NEED TO HELP OUR ANIMALS NOT KILL THEM!!NOT TO MENTION WE SPAY/NEUTER AND GET SHOTS FOR ALL OF THE ANIMALS WITH VERY LITTLE MONEY TO GO ON, MOST COMES OUT OF OUR OWN POCKETS.
I didn't know that aspect of it~ And I certainly agree. So maybe no kill shelters are the best thing.....with the documentary I saw I was under the impression that most dogs have to live their lives in a kennel and in the kennel enviorment with no hope of a better life and that after time they go mad. Thank you skye....
