Hey I'm not a fan of rap, but I think I might be if I found the right stuff. Does anyone know any groups that aren't all about sex and violence? Maybe with more complex background music, maybe with funny lyrics, maybe political or something?
Immortal Technique is an incredible rapper. He's very political...but extremely hardcore at the same time. Id recommend for you: Brother Ali (recently became my favorite rapper) atmosphere and Mos Def
KRS-one... probably one of the smartest mc's out there... and i agree with EnterTheFarside... Brother Ali is fuckin awesome... he's actually the only rapper i listen to anymore... along with a little Eyedea and Abilities
check tha ones posted above... Rakim is good too Also I know he's probably tha epitome of gansta rap but... you should check some Tupac. He's definately one of the most political rappers there has ever been. If you listen to some of his rhymes you'll understand, all of his jams are not gangsta.... Come listen to my truest thoughts, my truest feelingsAll my peers doing years beyond drug dealingHow many caskets can we witnessBefore we see it's hard to live this life without God, So we must ask forgivenessUnconditional Love Can't a brother get a little peace? It's war on the streets and the war in the Middle East Instead of war on poverty they got a war on drugs So the police can bother me Changes You know it makes me unhappy When brothas make babies, And leave a young mother to be a pappyAnd since we all came from a womanGot our name from a woman and our game from a woman I wonder why we take from our women Why we rape our women, do we hate our women? I think it's time to kill for our women Time to heal our women, be real to our women Keep Ya Head Up How could it be?Through the misery that came to passThe hard times make a true friend afraid to ask, for currencyBut you could run to me when you need me, I'll never leave I just needed someone to believe in, as you can see Until the End of Time There's no need for you to fear meIf you take the time to hear me, maybe you can learn to cheer meIt ain't about black or white 'cause we're humanI hope we see the light before it's ruinedGhetto Gospel
Oldies, classic rock, and really random other stuff. Top 5 bands (in no particular order): The Kinks, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Aquabats, Devo.
Word. From "Propaganda": You can’t fool all the people all of the time But if you fool the right ones, then the rest will fall behind Tell me who’s got control of your mind? your world view? Is it the news or the movie you’re taking your girl to? (uh) Know what I’m sayin cause uncle sam got a plan If you examine what they tellin us then you will understand What they plantin in the seeds of the next generation Feeding our children miseducation No one knows if there’s ufo’s or any life on mars Or what they do when they up in the stars Because I don’t believe a word of what the president said He filling our head with lies got us hypnotised When he be speaking in cold words about crime and poverty Drugs, welfare, prisons, guns and robbery It really means us, there’s no excuse for the slander But what’s good for the goose, is still good for the gander
Ok, so I've discovered a couple groups for example. I've like Arrested Development for awhile, and recently found A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep, and a couple others that I think are the same type that I haven't listened to yet. Those are Beatnuts, Monie Love, Common, and Leaders of the New School.
I"d recommend The Voice (www.statikent.com) is really good as well as politically or socially oriented. Also, another "gangsta" rapper that is worth looking into is Nas. His style borders poetry, and a lot of his music goes deeper than it suggests at first listen.
Living legends , Common Market, Murs , Slug, awallone,Brother ali,Sage francis This is music about building comminity. Policical rap. counciouse rap about the world we live in . Not commerical bitches and hoes and stabbing on the block. s
