It's been 3.5 years since I got dreads. They look kinda awesome now, I won't lie. And i can see that this is the kind of dreads I wanted when decided to have them. But lately I'm getting urges to cut them. I have a number of reasons to cut: - Washing and drying taking a very long time - Don't want to be just "that dude with dreadlocks" - I'm very into hard rock, and plan to join a band too and dreadlocks look a bit weird in a hard rock band. - I don't want to live the majority of my youth having dreads for some reason. - The longer I wait, the later my normal hair will take to grow to the length I want. - And I'd rather have all natural dreads than backcombed ones, maybe I'll have a natural set later in my life. And the only reason I'd want to keep them is: - It looks fucking cool in the mirror Yet I still can't decide. What do you think?
If you go more days wanting to cut than not cut over an appropriate amount of time (for you that you decide) then thats what you should do, Although i maintain that the cutting of dreadlocks is a travesty
They're too much work to keep them if you're not 100% into them in my opinion. Growing back to length wouldn't be something I would put on the table though because you can take them out if you want the hair back that bad. My girlfriend had enough of her dreadlocks and didn't fancy having short hair. So I picked out the dreadlocks using lots of conditioner and a knitting needle.
I had about a year of 'should I comb? I wanna comb' on and off, then one day I just found myself constantly brushing out ends when I was bored so I figured it was time. I regret nothing!
If you love something, Set it free... If it comes back, It's meant to be. Set them free man..... Set them free.
It seems like it's time for a change Dreadlocks are sweet, and I bet after 3 years yours are looking pretty rad... but then again 3 years is quite a long time for a hairstyle! You have so many reasons to why you want to cut them, so do it! You'll still look awesome i'm sure, and it will feel liberating.
In regards to cutting them and getting them again natural down the road. I don't really see the point in that. I've read it a few times on the forum and I feel it's simply an idea instilled from reading too many forum posts. I'm a member on many different forums for varied topics and there's always a hierarchy among the posters with people in awe of those at the top. On technology forums it's the people with the latest gear from the most clique-y boutique manufacturer, with guitars it's the poster that has the most or the oldest gear and here it's who's had theirs the longest and who's got theirs naturally. If you're considering cutting out 'perfectly good' dreadlocks to start over naturally, I think you need better things to occupy your time.
