Why dont Germain Greer just get off our TV screens, she poses as some kind of art critic - always injecting her neolithic brand of feminism into the equasion - not seeing whats in front of her eyes - that she and her buddies won the feminist argument back in the 70's and 80's - but girls and young women now dont want that "in your face" politics on the agenda to be a specifically feminist agenda - they are more about saying yeah we won enough freedom so now its not about the differences its about the similarities ! Its about uniting politics not pointing out where we have been kept down - but what we can do as equals !!! germain Greer is a dinosaur
feminism is far from over. the fight for equality will never die. even when perfect balance is reached it must be UPHELD and that is why a concept such as that can never die.
Feminism is over?? Awesome!!!! Now I can walk down the street at night without fear! Women and children are no longer exploited, beaten, abused, raped or murdered! I earn exactly the same amount a man makes for exactly the same work! Every employer offers full benefits, health insurance and on-site daycare! My husband can stay home and take care of the kids and help with the housework if he so chooses, without being called a wimp and a sissy! I am not judged by my looks, my weight, or my social status, but by the content of my character! I am not charged more for goods and services simply because I'm a woman! I am not automatically thought to be obsessed with shoes, chocolate, shopping and cute male heineys! My body is respected, not ridiculed, for the awesome power it possesses to nurture and give birth to another human being! I can even run for President and NO ONE WILL THINK I'M TRYING TO BE A MAN!!!! </sarcasm> I trust I've made my point.
OOoooOw! Time of the month? I'm sorry. I'm really fucking sorry. It's not even that funny, I just couldn't stop myself.
Uh-huh. Thank you for proving my point. If feminism was "over," making that joke would not even have occurred to you. Did you actually read what I said, instead of concentrating on the way I said it? It's funny - when a man speaks his mind forcefully, he's applauded and admired. When a woman speaks her mind forcefully - oooooh, it must be that time of the month! Freud asked, "What do women want?" We want to be treated like human beings. That's what we want.
Feminism is the belief that men and women are equal in all ways, from equal pay to equal rights over OUR body. There is no punchline. It is a very simple definition. And yes, it will ALWAYS be MY body, and always has been, through pregnancy, miscarriage and giving birth. My womb, my body. I am sick of pseudo-men saying,"Once you get pregnant, it isn't your body anymore". Care to wager on that? What a dumb thing to say. And women have made such acomplishments. Please make up your mind. You don't like the people that are usually anti-choice because they are also anti everything else, all government programs, pro- No child left behind (if you read it you wouldn't be behind it), tax cuts for the VERY wealthy, etc. They want no middle class, only very rich and very poor. As a teacher I have seen the wealthier kids get treated better than the kids from poor families. It isn't right, but that is the way the world thinks. And how can anyone vote even if they are against abortion when they also won't let same sex have same rights as heterosexual partners. Just blanket statement, "I'm against abortion", is ridiculous, especially knowing the consequences of illegal termination. It is a fact of life, here and everywhere in the world. Vote for Mcain if you want your right erroded. "I'm for this, because I'm liberal in that sense, but I, blah, blah, blah." Pick one side and stay on it. If you don't want anymore government programs that help, or welfare like food stamps ,and a range of things for you to choose in school for your child, like music and drama will be GONE if No Child Left Behind is passed. It is a way to get rid of all those fun classses, and just get the child ready for standardized testing. Filling in all those bubbles. No more music or drama or art or specialized sports. And if feminism were over, we wouldn't still be fighting the fight that we have for about 150 years. Why doesn't it make anyone else angry that women just got the vote 86 years ago?!!! Try and think about things and READ about them. And I don't really care about men on this board saying, "It is not your body." Well, I know it isn't yours. Any women that is against abortion, DON'T HAVE ONE!!! But Pray very hard you are never impregnated by rape, and now it doesn't matter if your life is in danger. We have become too relaxed because we grew up with Roe v. Wade. If it goes, we will ALL want it back, even as a safety net. How can you tell every woman what to do with her own body? And I can just imagine your reasoning too, so full of holes. I don't want to hear it. I am pro-family, pro-childen, PRO-CHOICE!!! And if you notice, all politicians and anti-choice groups care about is a fetus inside a womb. Once it is born, it is on its own. Who cares if it goes home with a couple or woman who is completely in the dark about parenting? Who cares, right? As long as they don't touch the fetus. The child, eh, they will learn eventually, after many close calls and neglect. Teaches are supposed to raise children in some eyes. And I bet many of you that love to pontificate over this don't even take the time out to vote. So your opinion means nothing then. I am pro-choice and I vote.
I actually kind of agree that greer is a dinosaur...I do think people bringing the issue up all the time isnt so good, and especially if its done in an aggressive manner BUT the others are right, feminism isnt over. Are you in the UK sentient? If so (and you obviously watch tele) have you noticed the adverts...that Cilit Bang one for a start..."over a million women in the UK are using this new cleaner"...followed by images of 3 women in aprons doing the cleaning. So MEN dont clean!?...i thought this was bloody 2007! "Thats why mums go to iceland" is another example...why cant dads be going? It seems subtle, but language is powerful, and messages and images like that still on our screens worries me. If youre not in the UK, our commercials are like that! And there are hundreds of examples of it in the media everywhere sad as it is. Sometimes i fear were going backwards
I do agree with you about the language used in commercials. It's not just in the UK. The cleaner commercials, the baby products that are always marketed to mothers... "The number one choice of Canadian moms", I heard on one commercial. What about the dads? And nlove... "pick one side and stay on it"? What bullshit.
Well, you with about 2000 posts must watch alot of tele whilst playing games on the computer. We should all thank Germaine Greer, and not just her. There are scores of women, Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinam,Geraldina Ferra (just for having the "balls" do do what they knew would be taken in a violent way.) What about Margaret Sanger? We should thank her every day of our lives. She showed women about how their bodies worked, about menstruation, and especially with her Irish Catholic patients, they begged her to help them find a way of not getting pregnant EVER AGAIN or in exceptional cases, the reasoning behind a safer method of abortion. So many women were dying. The babies and the women were dying. She was cited by the police for promoting obscene material. You could only pray that anyone thinks as highly of you as Germaine. Because of Margaret Sanger, we now have Planned Parenthood. And nobody is saying look back, they are saying, "Look how far we've come (well, some of us). Without the suffragettes, who put up with sewing prisons and diseases just because they wanted the right to VOTE!! Thank you, sister suffragettes. What was that line from Mary Poppins about men, "Even though we love them individually, as a group they are rather stupid". So MARCH ON, SISTER SUFFRAGETTES. White women, of which I am one, didn't even get the vote until 1920, only 87 years!!! It's right to look back and thank those that brought us this far. Women in Colleges was unheard of until brave, smart women said, "I can do that just as well, maybe even better, than a man. Maybe even EQUAL to a man. I would love it if my daughters wanted to attend Smith or Radcliffe. The women there are not afraid to ask a questuon in class, because it happens, often,as ridicule is alive and well. These young women, who get to meet plenty of men, do not have to dress like they are going to a party for class. I used to see girls with actual white gloves going to class. I looked like I rolled straight out of bed, quick shower. Hair dried slowly in the wind. I looked perfectly like a student dressed for a two hour lecture. And the women at those excellent colleges wouldn't wear that to class. They are there to learn, and meet guys PLENTY of places. Don't forget Bernice Ballen, who took on very, very radical feminists in the early 60's who actually had a doctrine of "No Men, No Problems" They even told her to mercifully kill her new baby boy. She fought for years to get groups like that to stop funding through ways to make the group sound united, when it was nothing but very angry women who actually believed a world without men there would be no problems. Nice thought at times, but we really need the truly great men. Thank all of you brave women and the brave men that fought along side, Equally. I love the feminist song about the "Old Boy's Network". One of the lines is, "Open your doors, or we'll break them down." A great union song, but perfect for the occasion.
I'm pretty sure 72 cents on the dollar isn't equal yet; however, the spelling of "womyn" has always bothered me. Men & women are connected & equal. Respelling just seems like some kind of kiddie fight. Talk it out. Good goshers! Respect the feminists AND the traditionalists. As women, we should have the right to BOTH roles, & men too. So to each her own. Ha! Ramble, ramble....
