I am so fucking sick of these "nu punk" bands that actually consider themselves punk. its bullshit! theyve lost it all! there are verry few true new punk bands... bands likke green day, simple plan, sum 41, avril lavign just to name some... that shit should not hold the name punk. they have turned a political motion and lifestyle into music to profit off of it. Fuck them!the other day, i saw a picture of green day with "punks not dead written under it. what the fuck are they thinking! if they want to do it, its their own right... punk is far from dead, but people like green day are slowly draining it, by advertising it as such a friendly thing. they have the kids kissing their asses! look at them! of corse they sing about war being bad, and the problems in the system... btu are thye out doing anything about it? no! this just my personal oppinion, adn im sure a lot of people out there would disagree with it, but what ever. fuck off then.did these bands in the nu punk seen start off by meaning to make a difference but just fucking up along the way or what? my conclusion to all this, is punk is what you believe, and it should not be used as a way to profit, or fit in, or even become famouse... thats against what it stands for for christs sake! do it because you believe in it, not fro any other reason. dont conform, dont give in, and keep striving for what you believe in. look at the biger picture of things... something needs to be done, and at the moment the punk representatives mainly seen out there are wankers like the bands mentioned above. what a great image of punk they are giving off...
Punk bands... Like who? The Sex Pistols? Black Flag? Jeez, I hate punk rants. You always hear them from 13/14 year olds who think they're above 'poser bands'. Get over yourselves. *edit* I smell a flame war .
Face it, bands that consider themselves "Real Punk" are generally truely, truely awful. Just become a fucking nihilist for christsake! Then none of this crap can bother you.
Fuck me...two 14yr olds arguing the philosophical implications of Punk and how it's misrepresented in mainstream media...the mind boggles... So Greenday etc decided to sell out and make oodles of cash......don't fucking worry about it, it's their life, fuck all to do with you wot they do with it!
im just saying its against what it stands for, and its earning true punk a bad name. yes i am 14, and yes i am ranting on about what a band is labeled, but i think it is truly going against the whole point of punk. its like calling yourself a raper if u actually only listen to rock. they need to get the facts straight.
Well personnally i've never met a "real" punk who gave a flying fuck what anyone labelled them, and even less on how other people labelled themselves..... I think you want to worry less about about how people define "punk" and more wot about being a punk actually means to you
The Punk ideologies were fucked over from the start, it's always been like this, it's nothing new, don't worry.
obviously this is a one sided arguement... i guess it kind of depends on ur point of view. im no punk, but i do have a problem with bands faking what they are. obviously im outnumbered, but i still hold my train of thought.
Ever thought about this, ALL punks are posers, and they're all just trying as hard as hell not to be seen as posers. The smart ones realised a long, long time ago that that mentality was not taking them anywhere. They then went on to make pop punk and millions upon millions of dollars.
Fine, but all the really good indie bands eventually sign to a major label or Matador or Domino. It doesn't make sense for a band that people really like to stay on a shitty ass label.
If you want to keep your Artistic intergity you do. However... you can't change it if you excpect MTV to get it right then you are worng. MTV lives to take good stuff and water it down to be a product.Just deal qith it. besides....Green Day is still good(its just that their choices say that they don't take their art as seroisly as others.)
You foolish fucker, do you actually believe that signing to a major label will make you worse? Bands make bad albums when they run out of ideas, not when they sign to majors. In fact, most artists, when moved to a major label (assuming they spend the extra money on the right things) make far superior albums to the massively hyped indie stuff they used to make.
People are far too age-ist. yes i am only 15 but i personally dont care about this new punk VS. punk because i dont like punk, but the maker of the thread is just stating the fact how new bands call themselves punk but are not actually, and that this is misrepresentation.
this whole thread isnt much about record labels, but i agree with the stuff stated above that it drains them. if your a punk band (or were) like crass, sure you get some cds out, btu you would also be actively demonstrating. punk was started as a movement of resistance and freedom of though, and is similar to the hippies in a few ways. i know punk is just a label, but it is a label with a meaning behind it, and a history. green day and good charlot and etc... should not be stealing the history of the name that is not theirs. calling yourself a punk band when ur not, is disrespectfull. true punk is slowly dying, and it is possible that it gets revived, but when it does get revived no one will remmeber it for being "punk" because the new crap are labeling themselves punk.
actually, bleach to nevermind to in utero is not at all what your saying, they were signed on a major label with bleach, too bad the album sucked, then nevermind hit it big, and kurt wanted to lose fans so he made in utero heavier, that didnt work so he started on another album which wouldve been heavier (you heard that unreleased shit) too bad hes a giant pussy and killed himself. and yea you guys are right, punk should go back to the way it used to be, heroin, people looking like retards, and musicians so fucked up on stage your not sure if its music or masterbation. your fucking idiots, grow up. what kind of music do you listen to that deviates you so much from everyone else?
ok i was wrong about switching labels, but subpop is still somewhat if a major label, for starters, theyre mostly owned by timewarner, thats not a big company now is it? They dont have big bands such as hot hot heat, reverend horton heat, mudhoney, postal service, now do they? wait no, they do. After nevermind, kurt wanted to go back to their roots and make in utero a much heavier album, and you disagree why? have you even heard the album? listen to scentless aprentice then listen to anything off nevermind. i never said anything about talent, i said that the bands were so fucked up on heroin among other things that seeing them roll around on the floor at a show wasnt exactly a good time. i dont listen to 'faggot emo bands' so you still havent shown how your something special. try harder, please.
