You know that really great sweet/salty popcorn you can usually only get at fairs and carnivals and the like? Pretty easy to make, really inexpensive, and you don't have to wait for the carnival to roll into town. The procedure is kinda like how you'd normally make popcorn on the stove, with the addition of sugar. I'm giving really detailed instructions here, it's actually a lot simpler than this looks... Not too many folks know how to make stovetop popcorn these days, it seems... What you need: A good sized medium saucepan with a lid 1/3 cup popcorn kernals 3 Tbsp oil 3 Tbsp sugar salt What ya do: Put oil in the saucepan with one of the popcorn kernals, cover with the lid. Turn the heat on to medium-high and let it heat up until the kernal pops into a nice piece of fluffy white popcorn. Get the rest of the popcorn in there and the sugar, and stir it up quickly so that all the sugar is saturated in the oil, sorta mixed through and maybe even dissolved a little bit. Put the lid on and shake constantly back and forth on the burner, without stopping, and hold that lid down! Keep shaking and all the kernals will start popping after a minute or two, and once they start, go a little faster. After another minute or two, they should be all popped. You'll hear when it's done popping. Take the lid off and bask in the glory of all that fresh popcorn. After you've done that for a good 10 seconds or so, salt it lightly, and savour every last piece.
and i have to agree with you....not a whole lot of people are familiar with making popcorn on the stove nowadays....my mom told me the other day that i'm better at it than she is.....she's just grown so accustomed to throwing a bag in the microwave that she has lost her touch when it comes to making it on the stove....
