Hundreds gather in downtown LA for Occupy march

Following a morning march, police began arresting protesters who locked arms and set up tents, blocking the intersection of Figueroa and Fourth streets and snarling morning rush-hour traffic in the area.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday, hundreds of Occupy demonstrators hit the streets of downtown Los Angeles, chanting and carrying picket signs as they marched through the financial district. Protesters attached banners to overpasses and set up tents in the intersection of Figueroa and Fourth streets, snarling morning rush-hour traffic in the area.

Police declared an unlawful assembly and began issuing a dispersal order around 9 a.m; a small group remained in the street. Police began arresting those in tents blocking the street. Police removed the tents, though some protesters remained sitting in the street, waiting to be arrested. As of 10 a.m., 23 people were arrested.

Los Angeles police began arresting dozens of Occupy Los Angeles protesters who refused to leave Bank of America Plaza in in the financial district Thursday afternoon in the second major protest of the day.

Police ordered the protesters to disperse at 4:10 p.m., a request that was greeted with chants of "Shame on you."

The protesters began taking over the plaza about 1 p.m. after a march from City Hall. They set up tents on a grassy area and locked arms, where they faced down police. But the property owner informed the LAPD that it was closing the park, which is private property, and requested that anybody who remained be arrested for trespassing.

Mayor Villaraigosa served notice on Friday that Occupy Los Angeles is no longer welcome, the occupiers asked to leave by 12:01 AM Monday morning.

In response to Mayor Villaraigosa's and other CA officials comments made earlier today regarding Occupy LA:

We appreciate Mayor Villaraigosa's statement of respect as well as Senator Feinstein’s acknowledgment of the first amendment rights of the occupiers. We are deeply grateful for the support we have received from the City of Los Angeles, whose council 2 weeks ago formally announced their support for Occupy LA. As recently as this morning, Councilman Rosendahl reconfirmed this support of the occupiers. We sincerely hope that the civic unity demonstrated by our positive working relationship with city officials and the LAPD is not in any way reversed or compromised.

As for a time stamp on our departure, there is none; we are resolved to continue our peaceful occupation.

We are committed to ensuring that our camp is safe and secure for those who have chosen to join the movement, and we are ready to take any appropriate action to ensure that this occupation continues in a manner that is consistent with the health and safety of the “citizens” of Occupy Los Angeles.

Occupiers across America are bravely and against great odds and obstacles exercising the right to have their voices heard in a public forum; we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around this nation and around the globe.

In regards to the lawn and trees, Occupy LA will do anything we can to ensure that the park is returned to its original state, if not a better one, for all Angelinos to enjoy. The occupy movement does not intend to leave any part of any occupied area worse than they found it.

Police in riot gear closed in before dawn Monday on some 2,000 anti-Wall Street activists who defied a midnight deadline to vacate an 8-week-old encampment outside Los Angeles City Hall before blocking traffic.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had given protesters until 12:01 a.m. local time to dismantle their tents and clear out of the City Hall park or face a forcible removal, setting the stage for the latest showdown between leaders of a major U.S. city and the Occupy Wall Street movement.

But about two hours after the eviction deadline had passed, police commanders said they would permit the Occupy LA encampment to stay put until at least daybreak, forestalling a raid for which demonstrators had been bracing.

Police, however, later declared scores of protesters blocking a downtown intersection at the edge of the park to be an unlawful assembly and gave them five minutes to disperse.

"I command all those assembled to disperse," an officer shouted over a public address system from a police truck. "If you do not do so you will be subject to arrest or other police actions."

Minutes later, dozens of helmeted police carrying night sticks and special shotguns for firing "bean-bag" projectiles enclosed the intersection and forced their way into the crowd with batons, as demonstrators who had lingered in the street quickly retreated into the park.

Onlookers chanted "Whose street? Our Street" at police and shouted at those defying police to "Get off the street!"

At least one demonstrator was hauled away by officers after someone in the crowd hurled what appeared to be pieces of a bamboo pole at police.

I was thinking about that a while ago. I was actually watching some Dragnet at the time. And thought "well I guess they wouldnt be filming there anytime soon." opps.

I was wondering if other filming or the use of this Occupy Movement would be used in a current tv sitcom / possibly one where the teens in the family rebels / It seems odd to ignore it when other family world issues are driving in the programmings.

At a meeting of demonstrators Tuesday evening, organizers said that it was "very probable" that some kind of raid will occur tonight. There was no indication of police activity at the site as of 7:50 p.m.

Mario Brito and Jacob Hay, two Occupy activists, released a statement urging a "nonviolent resolution to the encampment at City Hall. We call on all sides to show respect and restraint."
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he decided that it was time to evict Occupy L.A. protesters from the City Hall lawn after learning that there were children staying there.
Given the smattering of assaults and other incidents reported at the camp, “the chaos out there could produce something awful,” he said in an interview with The Times.

We really do live in a police state. Anyone who can look at pictures of police in riot gear marching to interrupt a peaceful demonstration and still say we are not living in a police state is an idiot.

Everyone call 1-877-527-3247 (LAPD'S anonymous crime tip line, and yes you get to talk to a real person) and report this as a crime.

What's with all the drawn weapons? Are they really ready to shoot people who don't move? Is this intimidation supposed to scare people? Is the Police State getting scared of the Occupy movement?

You see what the Senate just passed?!!! A new law that allows the gov't to detain anyone indefinitely without charge!!! You could just "disappear" and never been seen again, and never get a day in court...
