Now in most places outside of the US Obama and the Democrats are by far more ‘popular’ than Romney and the Republicans but in many case in the same way they are ‘popular’ among left leaning Americans, they are the ‘lesser of two evils’. Well after the last Obama victory I wrote a post – “Yes we can”…but we can what? http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=336311 In it I said - “Obama is a good orator and in a campaign there are certain forms and buttons that are pressed to make the right impression. The problem for me is that many of these forms are in fact some of the things I think are problems with the American outlook. For example from both all the major political blocks there is an insistence on American exceptionalism even of the US’s manifest destiny” Ok now we return to 2012 and Obama’s victory speech – “What makes America exceptional are the bonds that hold together the most diverse nation on Earth, the belief that our destiny is shared” An exceptional America with its own destiny. I think Americans have to stop thinking of themselves as exceptional and start realising they are just one part of a global community. As to that belief in the US’s manifest destiny that it has the answers and others should do as it does should end, America’s should take a good long look at what seems increasingly like a dysfunctional political system and start thinking about change.
Well what now? America has voted for four more years of gridlock. The House of Reps is still in the hands of the cons, and the Senate and White House are still in liberal control. Mitch McConnell's dream didn't come true, so will he send us off the fiscal cliff? Now that Obama has nothing more to run for, will he let his liberal hair down, or will he come out of the con closet? Did the cons learn the lesson, that their "screw'em" ideology is a loser? Will the GOP tell the teabaggers to shut the hell up? Will the dems lower the deficit spending with higher revenues, by getting rid of millionaire welfare? Will big oil greed continue rape this country? Will banks continue to sit on trillions of dollars, instead of making loans to get this country moving again? Will jobs be created by fixing the U.S. infrastructure, or will cons continue to obstruct for another four years? There sure are a lot of questions to be answered. A poll taken asking who's to blame for the economy, 68% blame Shrub and the cons.
Obama knows this. He just can't say it in public. There are some word games you have to play with the American voters if you want to have a chance at winning. One of them is pretending to be religious. You play along so that you get the chance to work on the issues that are really important to you. You learn how to pick your battles. To Romney, all of it was a game. He appears to have no convictions whatsoever. That's the most dangerous kind of politician. They would sell their grandmothers to Satan for a few votes.
This is a point I was making to all those dumbasses who thot Romney had an edge on the debt & economy because he was a successful rich businessman. (I suppose his plan was to export our unemployed workers to third world countries to work for subliving wages like business men do with their companies). Anyhow, I remind ppl that the POTUS is not able to affect the economy in this WORLD WIDE RECESSION until everyone else stabilizes. Look at the unemployment and debt in European countries. This is not just an American problem.
He was what we used to call a "corporate raider". Making shitloads of money off eliminating jobs has nothing to do with knowing how to create jobs, so I never saw his appeal. The wost thing Romney may have done was to perpetuate the lie about "trickle down economics". Tax cuts for the rich do not create jobs for ordinary people, unless you count household servants for the rich. Companies add jobs based on their expected workload. Also, he doesn't have a huge amount of power over the US economy. I would rank him third, behind the Chairman of the Fed, and the Congress, which creates the Federal budget. POTUS can only sign or veto what they send him.
American voters put the evangelicals to bed last night, along with the greedy. It's the POTUS that submits the budget to the congress. If congress rejects it there is no budget, like the last two years.
Don't count on that. Those two groups are still out there, and they would be very pissed at this point.
lol... sure they did. Yeah, there's no greed in the Democratic Party. They're not controlled by corporate interests just like the other party on the opposite "side."
I wish that was completely true. I'm in one of the few states (NC) that's going in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, our Democratic candidate for governor was a total loser. His TV commercials were embarrassing. Nobody thought he could win. We had a Republican governor 20 years ago, but the state legislature was Democratic. Nationally, I think the GOP shotgun wedding between the church nuts and the ultra-wealthy is headed for a nasty divorce. That's tradition, not law. Democratic-controlled congresses used to routinely reject Ronald Reagan's budgets without discussion, and wrote their own, from scratch. The Constitution gives the ultimate responsibility to the House, but there are no penalties for failure to produce one.
Yeap, Its time we focus on the home front and give the rest of the world a breather for awhile. 'Manifest Destiny' Ha! That's code for robbing and killing the natives while being backed by God.
Well, this is a country For the People, By the People and Of the People so these are the results of the votes. You can be upset with the results, but ultimately, Obama did win this election. That is the whole point. One isn't just put in power (like George W. Bush) one is voted into power by the people and the majority voted for Obama.
