Here in Las Vegas, and I am sure many other western cities have this problem, is that when I am looking in the classifieds for a job, more than 50 percent of the employers want you to be bilingual, mainly being able to speak Mezcan. This really pisses me off. The Mezcans are supposed to learn English when they come here. Why should I be forced to learn Mezcan so I can get a job. This is America, and here we speak English. I think it is totally unfair to restrict my employment opportunities because I dont speak Mezcan.

i guess you could say capitalism goes far beyond america, and is also bilingual and multicultural. and if you want to prosper in it, then you have to adapt with it. coporations want to appeal to everyone, especially to those who don't speak english.

to me that isn't right. if foreigners want to get by life in a new country, then they should learn the native language. what teh mexicans are doing to us is what we did to most of europe, and that is we made them change so that we were accomodated by them speaking our language. if you go to europe these days, most things will have a translation into english, and the people will know english. that's what is occuring here. mexicans immigrating here are making us learn there language so that businesses will be able to have an edge on competitors.

and that's that in a nutshell

Well we are one of the only bi-lingual nations anyways......Some countries have three or four national languages.
And Americans don't just speak english. Americans speak a myriad of languages. America is changing and that means Americans change. We are a country that has "give me your poor, and sick and huddled masses" written on one of the biggest symbols of America- The Statue of Liberty.
What we need is a better EDUCATION SYSTEM that will actually teach our children how to be bi-lingual in the first place. Americans seem ignorant and rude in thinking all we have to know is english.

    But that is my opinion.

You speak English, not english, but apparently not all that well. Mexicans don't speak mezcan, or even Mezcan... they speak Spanish. Just an FYI.

It is hard to fanthom why minimum to middle wage earners need to speak Spanish and executives don't.

I'm sure they say it's something they'd like, but not something that's MANDITORY. As with most jobs anywhere....
Maybe you should brush up on a language other than English....it may help you out when you try to sound intelligent.
I'm sure you have ancestors that didn't speak English when they came to America.

My ancestors came from Ireland and England. And a lot of the job listings in California state it as mandatory.

What languages do you speak MoonFlower? I took French in high school, because I thought I would be going there. Never happened, but it makes it easy for me to interpret Spanish speakers. They pretend not to understand English, but in many cases they do. They like being isolated and being able to talk about others behind their backs. They pretend not to be able to speak the language, they use this to their advantage.

I can't speak Spanish or write it, but I know what they are saying.

If you don't speak Spanish, don't get a job requiring you be bilingual.
    Wow....that was HARD.

Wait until you want a job MoonFlower and you have a family and kids and have been out of school for five years and they tell you that you need to be bilingual.

You sound like the average American. You must let go of your convictions of one-language-states. The world needs literary and intellectual progress... learning different languages and exploring different cultures is a part of it.

The tourism industry in Las Vegas needs Spanish speaking people. It's a beautiful language... learn it!

Why so I can supervise Mexicans making less than minimum wage and mopping floors and changing beds in Vegas? What about the boat people should I learn their language as well. Is Mung going to be mandatory as well, while CEOs in Europe and New York sit on their hands and swill their champagne.

Are you going to pay for me to go back to school and learn these languages?

I've had a few jobs. None that require me to be bilingual, but it came in handy when talking to Spanish customers who didn't do too well with English.
 I'm having a kid. Are you blind....
I know spanish and a touch of French. I'm not an idiot....I know the world is changing.
If you don't like it, learn another language or stick to your $5.00/hr jobs.

I am sure that you can find a job that does not require Spanish... but if you want a position higher than minimum wage, there are skills involved with it... these days those skills are lingual. The skills change with society. Maybe you should just work for minimum wage making beds with the Mexicans if you refuse to aquire the job qualification skills necessary.

You say go back to school and reeducate yourselves. We studied IT we built IT, now you tell us we have to be multilingual in order to supervise your under payed staff. I say I've had enough!

You're in CALIFORNIA....Las Vegas is in Nevada....why would YOU be supervising anyone there?
I'm sure those CEOs have knowledge of other languages....or they pay someone to speak for them while dealing with people of other languages.
Spanish is probably manditory because A LOT of Spanish/Mexican people are migrating to America.

You can't even get a job making beds or sweeping floors in California without knowing Spanish, but illegal aliens can.

    What are you, 12?
    America was built by IMMIGRANTS.
I'm sensing you're not too fond of Mexicans? That seems to be all you talk about when it comes to being underpayed....are you above them because you speak English?

Because Nevada shares a border with California and whether or not the media wants to report it the little man goes where the jobs are.

    THEN LEAVE.
Complain, complain, complain but do nothing about it. That works, I guess.
