If you knew that Starting today everyday from now on you would be given one billion dollars what would be the first thing you did?
Many other things would happen if this highly hypothetical thing would come true: people could almost carelessly invest in their dreams. Economic systems would change a lot, not be destroyed. Nobody would worry because we would have enough money to keep everything going. Work would be done only/mainly because it has to be done, and because we want to and like it, and even out of idealism, not because one HAS to pay their rent and get some bread on the table.
build a railway the same gauge as the darjeeling from kathmandu to darjeeling and in the other direction on the same guage as the simla, from kathmandu to simla. well that is of course, if the king of nepal would go for it. actually i wouldn't be the one to so, but its one of the kind of things i'd support, because i think with the highways they're making a big mistake. but of course, i could be all wrong. i'd also build a sanctuary for red pandas, in nevada county california, somewhere in the vacinity of grass valley, north colombia, north sam juan, you bet, red dog, cammel's hump, somewhere around in there, because i really think they might like the climate and thrive. and of course, along with the red pandas, two other inspirations, what ananda did and also train mountain up in oregon. so it would also be a kind of secular quasi monasitc quasi commune, village community, the whole thing, with eco friendly solar powered narrow gauge railways. i'd try to get towns and cities all over the planet to replace the automobile with public transportation, solar powered, narrow gauge railways. i mean with that kind of money, you can try things, from your imagination and if they don't work, to great loss, you're still not going to end up having to stand in a soup line. there are certainly a lot of things i would not do with or for it, and no, i would not really be trying to force my ideas down anyone's throat if the didn't want them. i'd just go someplace where they did, make myself king of some island somewhere, or sink it into building a faster then light u.f.o. well the furst thing, i mean all these big things, they take time to get started, no matter how much money you have to launch them with. so the furst thing, well even buying i nice chunk of densely forested mountain somewhere, i mean there's escarole, no matter how much money you have. in the u.s. anyway. of course i might consider moving someplace saner, or at least making prolonged visits to other places to find out which would be most comfortable for me to settle down. maybe i'd find out that was the u.s., i'm not denying that's possible, but i think more likely i'd find myself happier in canada or new zealand. there are other things, issues and so on, that are near to my heart. well one thing i'm pretty sure i wouldn't do. i just don't really believe i have the thick enough skin to go into politics. i would actually be able to contribute to some causes that interest me and things like that. oh and something i could do right away, is start commissioning artists i like. either as a person, those i know, and also those who's work i really love. that's something, the only regret i have for not being rich is not being able to do that.
The first thing? I'd try to figure out what the problem was with the banking system causing this to happen...
well of course, and yes i actually could and would, wait a month before doing anything with it, to make sure it wasn't some bizaar clerical error i'd have to pay back and never be able to. but at the very least, a little cabin out in the woulds and support for alley cat alies and friends of public transit. once everything was confirmend as being for real. i mean i wouldn't mind getting an actual check from an extraterrestrial embassy or something. after all, its not the little green pieces of paper that are unhappy.
I would just travel. That's probably all I would ever do with it, actually, and you don't need that much money to travel so I would give a lot I it to charity. Maybe start my own charity. But mostly I would just become a nomad. Maybe buy an Italian villa for when I need to rest.
I would run an organic and environmental friendly as possible farm. You don't have to worry about going bankrupt or profits! Everybody having enough money could just be what the world needs to get the far majority on a progressive path. Having financial risks is a large part of people not trying experimental things.
Anything I wanted, with the people I wanted...there would be a lot of happy people...and charity, of course! I would give research in Scotland enough to complete the research to help my granddaughter... Buy Doc a couple of kidneys! Yes, anything I wanted! When does it start? Pick me, pick me!
Banks do make mistakes. A few years ago I went to a walk up machine in the bank to get some cash. When I got my receipt the bank balance was $6,000 more than I knew was in my account. Sure enough, a couple days later I checked again and the $6,000 was gone. And it never did show up on my bank statement at the end of the month.
As each day went by I'd send a message to Elon Musk and say "You have (x) days until I'm richer than you.... Can I still have a free Tesla? Those things are expensive...".
