Palm rolling bad for your dreads?

Hey guys, I got my dreads done nearly two weeks ago and have a quick question. I'll have to post a pic of them when I've got time :p

I heard that palm rolling was bad for dreads because it thins them out. Is this true? I had my dreads made with backcombing+crotchet hook so they started out on the thinner side. There's quite a few loose hairs coming off the length of the dreads atm, so I've been palm rolling a lot. I've heard from some people that palm rolling doesn't really solve loose hairs, it just pushes them in temporarily. Not sure, I've palm rolled a lot and can't really tell if its pushing them in.

I've noticed the dreads that I've palm rolled the most (mainly at the front of my head) feel harder and are thinner. I guess that's because they've become tighter through the rubbing. I quite like the fluffier feel of the ones at the back that I've rolled less, it feels more natural. I don't like the idea of detracting from the overall 'volume' of the dreads either.

What are your views on palm rolling?

I palm roll my dreads, and they not that thin, just getting tighter. And about the loose hairs, in time they will lock up. Keep at it!

I started the backcombing route, but got bored and just let my hair do it's thing.

I've found palm rolling to only be helpful when wanted temporary tidying of my hair,
like If I was going out to dinner or something and wanted to look a little cleaner. But so far (about a month and a half) I haven't done it enough to see any long term effects...

Also, I'd say it gets you in a good habit of keeping dreads separate. I have just let my hair do whatever it wants,
and the roots are REALLY growing together, and I just haven't bothered to rip 'em apart, which I really should. So I'd say it is good for temporary tidying, and getting in the habit of keeping them separate if you want them to be.

As for damage, I don't know anything or have heard much about it.

    And Welcome, by the way!

it may not be bad for your dreads, good and bad being subjective, but its not really the right attitude.

    what you resist, it persists.

I occasionally palm roll but mostly only when I have a dread that's really kinky from me sleeping on it or if I have one with a loop sticking out etc. I don't think it can hurt in any way, but its definitely not something you NEED to do. Just another useful tool in your dread arsenal.

I do have a lot to say for clockwise rubbing though... really good for tidying up those roots. I can't see myself doing it more that once every 2 months or so, but its definitely useful.

flat just means they're not tight yet. The shape of your final dreads has more to do with how the base is shaped rather than what you do to them as they're tightening up. But if you wake up and they're flat and you don't want to deal with them looking flat the rest of the day... palmrolling them won't hurt as a temporary fix.

I have several locks that are flat and have been flat from day one and no matter what I did. Palm rolling along with any other "maintenance" routine is a waste of time and effort. Only newbs think it actually does something.

If you can't live with the "loose hair", don't waste you time and cut them now.

I have one semi-flat one in the front... not dramatically flat, but not round either.
