At the grocery store, is it better to get paper sacks and support the paper indusry to cut down more trees to make more paper sacks, or to get plastic, and save more trees? What do you think?

i say get a round of plastic and keep bringing it back with you, you'd probably be amazed how much plastic we waste via grocery stores and just in general, we waste so much crap on packaging and advertising and bullshit, and none of it is biodegradable...
and its all perfectly good, not like food in containers gets it dirty or anything.

and the idea of going and getting that much food that you cant carry it yourself in and of itself is kind of strange i think, were gluttonists really...americans make up like 5 percent of the world population and yet use 30 percent( i think) of the worlds resources.

or you can just bring a backback and ask 'em to toss it in there, or make some creative bags i saw someone with once who was into sewing and stuff...

Can't get paper bags here, and we gotta pay for our plastic bags (stronger ones than the ones I usually got in the US though). So almost everyone re-uses their bags, which I think is the best option :)

Btw, we'd re-use our thin plastic bags too, we never bought small sized trash bags..

You can always recycle the paper and plastic bags. That's what I do. But I'm going to buy one of those canvas bags and just use that.....that's probably the best thing to do.

Yea, I started to carry my own bag into the store with me to pack my own food and such, but I would like to find a light-weight hemp sack that I can pack my stuff into, since alot of the stuff I tend to drag around is heavy.

I shop daily, because I tend to go to the store and try to anticipate what I want, but by the time the end of the week hits, I change my mind. That is why I shop daily, and need only a small sack.

they have kitchen bins here that are the same size as the plastic bags from the supermarket so that is good as you can re use them and not have to buy plastic bags specially for your bin....best idea though is to take a bag or two and lug stuff home in that...if you have a car though maybe you could even reduce that too!

paper can come from plantations...this can be better than plastic as plastic is made from non renewable sources such as oil...there are problems with plantations in that they are mono cultures, quite often of species such as blue gums which are a foreign species, but even this can reduced if they are planted and managed well with the local environment in mind. I think it requires a really concerted consumer demand for alternatives and the use of alternatives by consumers...that is us...whenever possible!
    :)

    Bring your own bag.

But if you forget, ask yourself what other use do you have for the bags. Let that reuse decide which bag to ask for.
