Hi Everyone! My mother-in-law gave me a sewing machine for Christmas last year and I've made a few simple little things for my baby girl, some pants, and a skirt for me. I'm going to try to patch some scraps of old fabric together for making various things but I'm wondering how you make them neat. I was thinking that you'd have to sew them together on the inside, like a regular seem, but how do you make the inside seam flat, or pressed I guess they call it. I don't think it would be too comfortable for the seems of the patches to rub on the sides of my legs when I walk. Do I have to line the inside of the fabric with something? I'm in serious need of a sewing class/book, but I thought I may be able to get some help here first? Thanks, Lena
you really don't need to line it, it's not uncomfortable at all, unless what you're making is super tight and pressed right up against your skin, it's all good :0) If you wanted to, I suppose you could sew the seam to the patch obove or below it (know what I mean?) but it's really not that necessary good luck with your project!
yeah- its not too bad, The only time i really line anything like that is if I do patchwork for the bodice of a top,. The seams can sometimes be unnconfortable on the boobies ya know.
i sew my patchies with a good straight stitch and then again with a zig zag. i trim the fabric as close as possiblt to the zig zag stitch. i'm comfortable with this and don't seem to need a lining. but i know some people are more sensitive to seams and clothing tags, so maybe in that case, lining might be a good idea. kathy
I just made a patchwork skirt about a week or 2 ago and I didn't want the seams rubbing my legs either, so I got some cool purple batik material and made the skirt not only lined, but reversable! It's really comfy...Just don't wear tights underneath.
