In the US you can find out if a pedophile lives near you. This issue is being debated in the UK, as to whether we should have similar legislation. What do you think? Should we be able to find out if a pedophile lives near us? Or will this lead to vigilantism? Does a pedophile who has served their term have a right to anonymous rehabilitation?
I think I would like to know if there were pedophiles near by.. I don't think a stint in jail is going to cure the person!! Definately would like to know, so I can protect my children etc...
Tough question. I suppose you'd have to know a) how many of these delightful folk were tarred-&-feathered as a result of their location being public knowledge, and b) whether it had any effect on the rate of attacks on and abductions of children. But it's hard to muster sympathy for them, isn't it?--as much as we are supposed to be about "peace, love and understanding." Here's a supplementary question: does sexual repression in society contribute to such perversions/ disorders, or is too much sexual freedom the cause?
To be honest I dont think we should know if there is a convicted paedophile living near us. I believe it would cause more of a problem if they are found out than if they were left to try and rebuild their lives. I can understand where people are comming from wanting to know i mean how can they protect theirloved ones from something they dont know about but on the other hand this could be said about a lot more than just convicted paedophiles. If the person is trying to get on with their lives and try to fit into society *btw they are watch to make sure they are not a risk* who are we to judge them. They made a mistake that will be with them for life, in their lives and dreams alike. Im not condoning their behaviour and think that it is one of the sickest crimes ever but they are however you feel about still human beings.
All good points. I don't have children, so it would be hard to imagine the worry that people must go through over such issues - but I can begin to see things from that point of view. I'd certainly want to know if there was a dangerous criminal living near me. However, I don't think that pedophiles who are still a danger to the community should be let out at all. Prison should be used to keep people safe, not national sex offenders registers. However for people who genuinely have reformed, and are absolutely no danger, I feel it'd be a rather draconian measure to have them potentially hounded all their lives by press and residents. They would have to find somewhere to live. And Megan's Law, as its called in the US, might cause people to be driven underground, where they are less easily monitored, and where they can do more harm.
Maybe the middle road. Being aware that there is a paedophile in the area would be enough to remind people to be carefull..But maybe 'Mr Jones at no.23 is a sex offender' is a bit much. Just knowing there is one close by would be enough IMO
I'd rather know where a predator or a criminal lived than just a pedophile. What's next? A registry of sheep fuckers? Pedophilia is a desire to have sex with children. It is not an act itself, therefore it is not a crime. As for "sex offenders", why not have a registry of violent felons instead. That would cover molestors and rapists with killers and muggers, not misdemeanor offenses (merely because they were sexual).
once the prison centance is served the debt to society is payed abd having there presents known will cause more trouble than anything else
I'm not sure I agree. I'm not a fan of the prison system, and I think imprisonment shouldn't be used as a widespread punishment precisely because prison is not about reforming the individual. Many people re-offend after release. Prison should be used to keep dangerous criminals off the streets, not as a means for them to repay a debt to society.
i think people should be warned...but in a way that keeps the offender anonymous anyone who confesses and has learnt what they did was wrong deserves a chance to start all over again.
That could lead to a witch-hunt. I can picture it now: "He gave my child a sweet, he must be the pedophile!" "No, I'm his teacher! But that strangely dressed guy taking them across the road looks suspicious!" "I'm the lollypop man! Blame him, he's the pedophile." "I might have molested those children, but it was Abi who made me do it!" "Burn the witch!" "Burn the witch!" "I confess, I'm a witch, but only because Mr Proctor molested me." "Mr Proctor, admit you're the pedophile." "I shall not have my name muddied." "Then you shall hang!"
could'nt have put in better myself by letting people know where a sex offender lives you leave them open to vigilantes and thats not fair.
Apperently NONE of you have children and by the way your talking it's a good thing there are people that have more experience then you to bring this to public awearness. Have any of you kids been molested?!? I think not, for you to talk this way. Do you know they take infants and rape them, they go to jail, get released, their payment to socity done, and then they go out and do it again and again. Do any of you have baby brothers or sisters. Did you know that 67% of these little ones are mutilate and killed in torturous manners. How can you sit and say such unconscienable things. Talk to a parent of one of these children. Whitch Hunt indeed!! Midwifes were burned as witches bc the doctors wanted ultimate power and controll. This pedophile has ruined lives and more then one, so give him another chance to harm more.. Not A Chance In Hell. Would YOU let him in your home. Did you see this fiend's picture. Listen to yourselves and listen good. What are you saying. He sould be excepted in the family circle? We sould open our hearts and homes to him. Give him a break!?! What break did he give the kids and their familys. Peace Phoenix, I can't believe my eyes. I thought you had more about you. sh
FAIR!?! Are you kidding me? They victimized children and scarred them forever. Stop being a pushover liberal. convicted sex offenders need to be tracked, because they have the propensity to committ such acts.
This is a good example of how individuals can let emotion cloud their judgement of an issue, and a good example of why people should not be automatically told about ex-convicts in their area. We need a properly and fully accountable, impartial and unimpassioned judicial system to decide how best to protect people and how to treat offenders. It should be kept away from the (very understandable) passions of those affected. This issue stirs up a lot of emotion and that's precisely why people should not be told. It's practically an encouragement to vigilantism - an encouragement to more crime - rather than a progressive solution to the problem. And as Peace said, it's surely not about retribution but protection of children and rehabilitation or treatment of the offenders...
my two penneth is like yeah know were the scum live and let them know in no certain terms that you know that he knows that you know what he"s about . tell the sick evil monster not to go for a bevy locally and get theraphy " or maybe they should all be put in one area so everyone else can live and build peacefull loving communities without fear of sex cases . sex cases sex cases hang em hang em hang em . remember goin to town ( not for a bevy i might add) with a sex case moons ago "lets just say he has ashtrays still plummitin his head . sex or making love should be mutual NOT FORCED as of age ? gotta be twenties surely . at end of day .....we all need a soul mate and sex aint making love .........all in all the best weapon against sex cases is knowing your neighbors and havin yer wits about yer ..........anyway this subject depresses me " off too listen to some jam ..........eton rifles eton rifles ........whatta capatalist you turned out to be followed by some native meditation .........have a grand night dudes ........wheres me ganja .......peace and love
@ Peace-Phoenix - Yeah I was thinking about the possible *witchcraft effect before I wrote* But call me paranoid but I think it does exist already though What I mean’t by anonymous was like figures e.g. the number of them in say a city I feel a community has the right to know about any risks. But I think if they decide to protect the paedophile would’ent it just cause more and more people to commit to the crime because all they know they will be getting is say a sort prison p.s so you have seen the Crucible
Actually SH, the recidivism rate of a repeat molestor is VERY LOW. Less than 5% of sexual offenders EVER return back to prison for a sex crime. If they do go back, it is 9 times out of 10 for a probation violation or some other crime (other than a sex crime). The percentage of child molestors who true "pedophiles"? 2-10% range. Most molestors are FAMILY MEMBERS or CLOSE FRIENDS, not strange men down the road. And as far as abduction goes, damn right it occurs, but nowhere near what the media portrays. Actually statistics are LESS THAN 1% OF 3% of all the children in America. Secondly, the "NBC/PJ" busts on TV, are usually men (between 21-50) who are seeking sexual relations with teenagers (usually portrayed from 13-15, borderline legal) and not 7,8, or 9 year olds. Still not acceptable in society, but not pedophilia either. As Skip has stated; as I and others have stated: PARANOIA and VIGILANTISM only ADD to the problem. We must have a progressive solution which benefits the true victim and reforms the true offender. Chances are you've let a pedophile in your home and didn't even know it. They don't have a certain " fiendish look", you know.
