Flying saucers come to visit us. God incarnates himself and visits us. Discovery Channel says an extraterrestrial race diverted an asteroid to hit the Earth and kill the dinosaurs so that humans could evolve. Heaven is above and Hell is below with people right in the middle at the center of all the attention of a battle between God and Satan. A secret society of elites is out there somewhere plotting against the whole human race in a grand battle between the elites and the common man. The next life is going to be better than the current one. There is going to be a next life. God hand-picked Bush to become President to lead us through the valley of darkness in the 9/11 era. The Hale-Bopp comet passed by the earth for us so that enlightened people could could kill themselves, climb aboard, and elevate themselves to a new and better level. The elderly man who lived on Mount St. Helens said that the volcano would never blow regardless of what scientists said because he had been living there for decades and was entitled to continue living there. I'm glad I'm a people. (That's not to say that the above are not true. It's the way people are convinced that they are true.)
humanity is at a stage of transition that may interest people on other worlds. as for the rest of it, we do seem to have a rather ridiculously extreme collective ego.
