someone stole my potted elephant ear, and the hens and chicks right out of another pot that were in my back yard, not visable from the sidewalk/street! what the fuck!?! i am enraged, befuddled, and sad. i have no idea why someone would do this. i was letting the elephant ear freeze so i could dig it up and store the bulb over winter, and the thing looked terrible. it survived one frost already, but was showing signs of stress: yellowing, curled leaves, etc.. and the pot it was in was just a cheap plastic one from wal-mart.

the hens and chicks were in a cement trough my mom made me, but (luckily) they didn't take that. but they meticulously removed every single plant out of it, including the many, many babies that had sprouted all around the larger, main plants.

the grand total of all the things they stole was under $20, but it's just the whole idea of someone crouched over MY plants in MY backyard, ripping them out to put them in their own garden. who would do such a thing? it's just hard to believe that someone who enjoys gardening would steal them from a fellow gardener.

i'm feeling a little weary about planting my 30+ tulip bulbs i just bought that i wanted to put around the borrder of our house...what if they dig them up?!?

has anyone had any experiece with this? or any ideas that could thwart the plant thieves? i'm really hoping the don't come back!

We have those sort of problems around here too. Especially at our courthouse annex, which sits right next to the sheriff's office. My uncle was the grounds maintenance supervisor. Each year he planted the most beautiful coleus to color up a shadey area, and each year, the plants were uprooted and stolen.

What bothered me was that these jackasses didn't seem to know anything about coleus, if they had, they would have known that they could have just broken off a branch and rooted their own plant in a few days in a jar of water. And the rest of us citizens could have enjoyed the pretty display.

Sorry for your loss. They could have left you a few pups of that hen and chicks plant.

I'm going to tell you the truth: I'm guilty of plant thievery. Once, I stole a banana plant. Dug it up out of the ground and planted it in my yard. However, the plant was growing outside the fence, on the side of the road. Banana trees appeared to cover half the yard. I don't feel any remorse. I think of it as my way of improving the city's roads. I was thinking of doing something similar with some elephant ears, but then the owner mowed them all down.

So since the foliage was mown down you don't really want an elephant ear? You just like the purty foliage.

It was cut too short and I can't find it anymore :(. I think it died, along with most of the grass. Golf courses only get away with keeping their grass a few centimeters tall because they water and fertilize heavily, and use a special species of grass. Apparently the home owner who did the mowing didn't realize this. There is a field separating their house from mine, and once upon a time my brother was playing catch in it when someone from the house shot him with a bb gun. Suffice to say, I have no respect for those people, and don't really care if I dig up plants growing in the field behind their yard without their permission.

Maryjohn, if I'm ever digging up plants around your house and get hit with rock salt, I probably deserve it.

I share a balcony with another renter, and last spring she uprooted all of my seedings. She just left them there, pulled up for pure viciousness. That one got evicted, but we have a new one: a whole family that keeps wandering over the whole balcony. The new ones don't peer into our windows like the old one (Our complaints from that were what started the old one's destruction.), but they are, like, ten feet from our living room window. CREEPY AS FUCK! If they so much as touch my garden this spring, there will be vandalism charges. This is a heavy gardening community. The police will act.

gads... can you put up a room divider, like a couple doors hinged together? even a half sized one could help. or run some vertical vines?

No. The landlord has even said that the balconies are communal, and that they can walk over there as much as they like while they can't look in our windows. I think that's ridiculous, but we're hoping to find another place if there's any trouble. The new neighbors leave the balcony if they see that we're seeing them, so I suppose that's not too bad.

All in all, if I ignore the loud music that's constantly playing while we try to day-sleep, they're OK. All we need is the music turned down and the garden untouched. I wouldn't even mind seeing them look at my flowers. I'll help the woman start her own garden if she likes: she has half of the balcony too, and I have plenty of seeds.

I dunno. Most of the people in my neighborhood just seem so miserable that they want everyone around them to be miserable too. But then, that's most people in general these days.

I like your idea of helping her plant a garden of her own. Or perhaps just share some of your harvest with her. She'll find home grown is tastier, and maybe learn to respect your efforts.

I lot of what makes us miserable, is need and a feeling of being left out. Reaching out with a generous heart can sometimes aid in healing those injuries.
