look for "Region 16" on the road, it's a website for people who live on the road, I think it's groups.msn.com/region16
You could be a truck driver and drive around the country, an airline courier and fly around around the world, a willing worker on organic farms and live and work around the country for little to no pay. Or you can do crafts and sell them on street corners (Venice Beach is rad), or play an instrument. I knew a man who made all of his money playing his flute around the UK and made a pretty penny for it. He took me around London with him once when I was out of money. I tried to do portraits of people and did a very poor job. LOL!
Sell art and books and stuff odd things that you won't find other places. Or just sell something you like to make, out of the back of your van.
If you can make some nice hemp necklaces, Id recomend thick hemp personally, and try offing them at some place it seems impressionable youngens or stoners hang out, I think this angle would be quite effective in rallying some funds it only takes like a dollar to make a good hemp necklace and you could get 5-10 dollars a necklace.
