These drugs are used in "Hormone Replacement Therapy" during menopause and Perimenopause. There are many reasons NOT to use these drugs, the first being that menopause is not a disease, but a normal part of womynhood, like pregnancy and menstruation, an other being that it is very dangerous for a womyn's health and the other is the horrible conditions that the pregnant horses whose urine is used for this drug.

very good concept and good information!

my mother has cystic breasts and it is harmful for her to take any "hormone therapy" drugs. So if any of you ladies out there have that, take caution.

I absolutely agree that drugs are not needed for menopause. Just like depression meds aren't needed for every teenage girl who cries a lot. It's life.

Some people do need them.. My Mother has been going through menapause for well over 3 years now.. Its not getting any better for her.. She will go 6 months without a period.. then out of the blue she will get one that last over a month and she has to replace her tampon/pad ever 20 minutes, Im not kidding.. Its really really rough on her.. She gets wicked bad hot flashes that keep her up for days on end.. I hope i never get it as bad as her :(

But Most women dont need anything for it.. A few do... I think my mom is one of the rare cases. But my mom tries to stick to herbal remedies basically cause she can afford the others... But I am definatly gonna pass this along to her

From the study results I read, the risks to any one patient are highly exaggerated in this article. . .

I would not want to consume ANY urine product, however. The form of estrogen most readily available to the body is estradiol, which is available by itself, and it is synthetic. If a conjugated estrogen such as Premarin is preferred, Cenestin by DuraMed is comparable to Premarin, but it contains plant based estrogens. If vaginal symptoms, such as dryness, are the main concern, there are many topical synthetic estradiol products, including vaginal creams, vaginal tablets, and vaginal rings.
If you are on Premarin or Prempro, and are concerned about the risks presented here, I would strongly encourage you to consult your healthcare provider, but you should not abruptly halt HRT without your HCP's consent.

    Women's Health Initiative Study

In July 2002 a study by the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) in the United States to assess the long term benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was stopped early because women taking HRT were shown to have an increased risk of some health problems.

It is important to know that the study:

was designed to investigate the safety and efficacy of long-term HRT in preventing diseases such as heart disease and hip fractures in postmenopausal women.
involved 16,608 women ages 50 - 79 years who still had a uterus
used a specific combination of HRT - 0.625 mg conjugated equine oestrogens and 2.5 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MDA)
was not designed to study the effects of HRT in women who were using it to treat the symptoms of menopause
was scheduled to continue until 2005 but was stopped after an average follow up of 5.2 years

    What the study found

The WHI results tell us that there is a small increased risk of harm to an individual woman taking this combination of HRT. This risk means that in 10,000 women taking the drug for a year there will be:

7 more cases of coronary heart disease
8 more cases of invasive breast cancer
    8 more cases of stroke
8 more cases of blood clots on the lung
6 fewer cases of bowel cancer
    5 fewer hip fractures
The increase in harm was smaller in the first two to three years from starting treatment than with three or more years of use.

    The committee concluded that:

combination HRT in any form should not be used for long-term disease prevention in post menopausal women because the benefits are not sufficient to justify the risks of such use
the relevance of the findings in the WHI study to the use of short term HRT for the treatment of symptoms at the time of menopause is less clear
the continued use of combination HRT for women with established osteoporosis is an acceptable option for many women but women should discuss the benefits and risks with their doctor
it is unsafe for women who have a uterus (womb) to use oestrogen alone as this increases the risk of uterine cancer

What does this mean for women?

If you are a woman currently taking HRT or considering taking HRT:

be aware of and reassess the reasons why you chose to take HRT or why your doctor suggested you take HRT
seek information on the benefits and risks of taking HRT for both short and long time frames
seek information on lifestyle changes or complementary therapies that could improve your health and well-being
be aware that science and medicine still does not have all the answers and with future research we will continue to discover both positive and negative effects of certain treatments
make your decision using balanced information and how this fits in with your experiences and the context of your life. Any treatment should be tailored to you as an individual
any decision you make now is always open for reappraisal and possible change
