First of all, let me just say that i love hipforums b/c yall are really friendly, supportive, and informative.

So having said that, i was thinking to myself about forums like these, we have heard so much bulls*** from propaganda agencies (dare, governments programs that come to schools, etc.) But i was thinking to myself how much we talk about how they spread a lot of lies, misconceptions, and claims that are not supported by medical research. However, i do hear medical professionals despute negative impacts on the brain from drug use. So, here's what i'm wondering: honestly, is there a good chance that the things we say are just us rationalizing us getting high? Like for example, when someone says, "mdma does not put holes in your brain", whether this is true or not, is it possible that we say on this forum that it doesn't cause such damage only to tell ourselves that we can do it and be unaffected?

Oh ya, one more quick thing, i just want to say that the ONLY reason why i'm asking this is to broaden my education, not to cause negative controversy.

    you, my friend need www.erowid.org
best source of information on the web about this sort of thing.

as for MDMA putting holes in your brain, thats just straight bullshit, the only way your going to get holes in your brain is by either shooting or stabbing yourself in the head.

and to answer your other question, some people do tend to overlook negative effects of certain substances to rationalize their getting high. some people do, some people don't. The point is if a substance has such a negative effect on you, then you should make the responisible decision, and stop (or cut back) usage of that substance.

there are negative effects with all drugs its just how big or harm full they are and depending on the users health/mental health,so there is no drug not even weed thats 100 safe and wont harm you ever, so smoking weed harms you but it might not be as harm full as say alcohol, also all drugs effect different parts of the body some part can heal or handle the drug to a extenet others can't,but there are alot of mistruths about drugs they make it seem like anything that gets you high is horrible for your body, even look at fast food do you know how bad that stuff actuly is for you and thats just a type of food,so alot of things are harmful but your body was made to take them to a sertine point just dont over do it keep safe and healthy and you wont have to worry about the harmful effect just be awear

No, it's not just us rationalizing. Maybe some of it is us getting high.

But the study that concluded "MDMA puts holes in your brain," for example, was a poorly done study. Only one person who tried MDMA heavily had "holes in his brain," but what they DIDN'T tell you was that this person ALSO did TONS of DXM, which is known to cause Olney's Lesions in the brain, which SHOWS UP as "holes" or black spots on a brain scan.

No other MDMA users who used MDMA alone showed any signs of having "holes" in their brain.

The whole holes-in-your-brain-story was a giant misunderstanding.

An MTV-"Reporter" (if one could call these guys reporters) interviewed a doctor of radioneurology, who showed him a PET-scan (PET = Positron Emission Tomography) of the brain of a person, who consumed MDMA regularly. In a PET scan, a black area means, that there´s no activity at the moment - or at least no activity which requires the presence of the substance, that has been marked with an isotope and been injected to make the scan. It´s absolutely normal that a brain-PET shows some black (= inactive) areas, because you never use your whole brain at the same time (e.g.: if you don´t speak, the speech center would show inactive).
But the "reporter" didn´t get it and said, that the scanned person had holes in his brain...

    That´s how this legend started!

yeah, the flow is right, DXM is only theorized to cause Olney's lesions in humans, it hasn't yet been proven that it does. the "holes" caused by such damage would also be quite small, i believe, but i don't know for sure. it wouldnt show up like the altered PET scan, with large blotches.

i think to an extent there is a lot of rationalizing going on. but i think there is a lot of misinformation on both sides of the debate as to how harmful/beneficial one substance or another may be.

I'm sure a lot of it is pure rationalization. But I'm also sure that a lot of it is factual information gathered from legitimate sources and past experiences.
