It wasn't always shameful to be a hooker or prostitute. Some of them were proud of their profession and died rich. Especially in Renaissance Europe, where they often served as rich courtesans, or companions, to kings and emperors. When they died they often had lavish funerals too. Examples of this were Veronica Franco, Isabella de Luna and Imperia Cognati in Italy. And Nell Gwyn of England and Madame du Barry of France.
The field I fly from is next to Nell Gwyn's cottage in Hertfordshire. It's next to Salisbury Hall, where the deHavilland Mosquito was designed, although when she was there aircraft hadn't been invented. Not for another 300 years or so.
