Let's give a hand to French students and workers where OVER A MILLION have taken to the streets to protest! Some estimates are up to 3 million! They're protesting a new youth labor law that would have make it easier to fire people like in the US. Some of the protesters' rallying cries and statements: "Death to Cows" (A "cow" is like a "pig" in US protests.) "We want a rich life. Not a life of rich people." "We have immigrants. This law will make everyone an immigrant." A poll done in France shows that only 36% agree on the free market as the "best system" compared to 71% in the US, 66% in Britain and 65% in Germany. (The above from today's Wall Street Journal.) *** Let's also give a hand to immigrant protesters in the US this past week. I guess they're the only Americans who really care about anything. Who have any moral or political guts. Hey be sure to call your Republican congressmen and them them how much you favor TOUGH border control like that proposed by Hollingsworth in Arizona with the military doing patrols felony provisions etc. It'll solidify their bigot base and guarantee they lose the Hispanic vote. Meanwhile in the face of secret prisons, illegal spying, imprisonment without charges or representation, renditions and torture naturalized americans students and workers included just sit at home. Cows. Fat complacent morally bankrupt ones.
The way the french protestors are protesting is way out of order. Setting fire to everything in sight, attacking the police etc. If you want to demonstrate (which everyone seems to want to do for something or other lately) do it peacefully. The french protestors are getting very little sympathy from the rest of Europe.
Since the policy they are protesting is an internal French policy, I don't think the protestors care all that much whether you and/or the "rest of Europe" agree with their claim or their methods. Not that you can honestly speak for the "rest of Europe" anyways.
Well, let's face it, the French basically INVENTED protesting, or at least the modern equivalent of it, back during the French Revolution. At least they care about what happens to their lives as a result of certain policies, which is a whole lot more than I can so for most Americans. However, their methods of protesting certainly do leave a lot to be desired-things just haven't been the same for the French since the Reign of Terror-they've just got that kind of protesting in their blood, I'm afraid.
how on earth do you think the protests of the french revolution go back further than the protests of the american rev? protesting goes back far older than that. I'd be ashamed to be a part of those 3 million people protesting.
You think over a million protesters were ALL rioting? Duh? It was only a few as shown by the fact that they only arrested around 100 people. That's 100 out of a MILLION. But go ahead, paint all protesters with the same brush. It really makes you feel secure to think that all protesters are evil criminals. But it's totally not true. The vast majority are PEACEFUL. But don't let the facts disturb your fantasty about socialism being bad. And despite what you think, there is a LOT of sympathy around Europe. For instance when a similar anti-worker law was proposed recently in Holland to cut back on pensions, the Dutch turned out en masse and the law was instantly quashed. The rightwing leaders all over Europe have been trying to cut back on social benefits, and NOT succeeding because most of Europe is Social Democracies where the PEOPLE still play an important role in politics, via protests and strikes. And France has always had strong unions, unlike the US which has castrated unions over the past 20 yrs. Either you're a part of the system and can bring it down if it's not to the liking of the majority, or you're gonna be oppressed by the system that you let dominate your life and tell you how to live...
Everyone here is basically complaining about something or other. You blame the governments of the world like they are your parents. You basically want the system to wipe your arses for you. You are teenagers rebelling against the system. If you want something from life don't just complain, go and do it. Make a difference. Standing outside with a placard doesn't impress me and it doesn't impress the millions of tax payers who work hard to try and succeed in life the proper way, by working hard and contributing.
sorry what?? do you think people are protesting are a first resort, usualyl it is a last resort, to try and make yourself heard. jsut because you accept the system as it is, doesn't mean there are not some idealistic people out there. it doesn't impress me that you just accept things as they are. how about people who work their ass off yet do not 'suceed' because of the system. do you believe people arepoor in the third world because they are lazy??? and don't bring in the age thing, that is not a valid arguament
And they wonder why youth unemployment is so high in France. These protesters are demanding to keep it high.
I'd hardly call France a third world country. People in third world countries have a right to be pissed off, I'll give you that one but people in the west seem to be spending so much time fighting against "THE SYSTEM" that they are forgetting to live their lives. Are your lives that bad that you have to fight and protest over every little thing?
of course France is not a third world nation, neither is it utopia, so in your viewpoint, we there is no point to our soceties, we shouldn't stick to our dieologies, we shouldn't try and grow culturally and as a civilisisation, we should stick to what we have now, witht that thinking, not one development of the world would of happened thank God there are people who do not just accept our way of life for as it is now, and have some kind of ideals still
yeah, i heard they are thinking of the same thing here in Norway, why? its a dumb law in the first pleace!
I actually believe in contributing to a system now fighting against it. By standing in a street with placards and throwing things at shop windows you aren't helping the world grow.
i don't agree with their methods, but it appears it is working.the government called the unions to negotiate. as long as people pay their taxes and submit to the government they should have a secure job.those people protesting are not claiming to be given money for nothing.they want a job, they want to work.they want to be a part of society and benefit from the safety society should grant the individual, not to be parasites on welfare or on their parents backs or frigtened serfs that don't know if tomorrow means a new car or begging for food. those are not kids rebelling against the sistem because their classmates make fun of them at school.those are people that want a peaceful life and a safe job.
Exactly. When a lot of Americans talk about 'hard work' they mean working for a wage that you can't live on anyway and having absolutely no job security, where the workers have no control over the terms of their own employment, and can be fired for no reason at all. Screw all that. At least the French are upset for the right reason, even if the way they're going about it isn't always right. Americans are just too accustomed to taking things from business and government in a docile manner and shrugging their shoulders. It's a real shame, too.
do you believe protests have never brought about political and social change? they may not on there own, but they are a contribution, such as the civil rights movement what if you didn't believe in the system? would you want to contribute to it then?
