I notice how many communes are not very open on their policy on drugs and drug sharing except maybe pot. Is it assumed usually that most communes (alternative/rainbow living lifestyles) participate in the use of psychedelics fairly regularly or is this this a rare phenomena???

    i'm also interested in this.

i would assume (i know absolutely nothing about the subject so i may be completely wrong) that psychedelic use would turn to more natural sources (mescaline cacti, psychedelic mushrooms, morning glory seeds) as opposed to drugs like LSD.

Wow thank you so much for your intelligent response! No offense but what a misguided response. Drugs are inanimate substances so I'm afraid they cannot be "bad" or have any other moral alignment anymore than a stone or a tree. How people use drugs can be positive or negative. I advocate positive use of psychedelics for spiritual edification.

I see nothing wrong with a desire to live in a commune where psychedelics are not only tolerated but encouraged for all the right reasons. One of the main reasons I wish to join a commune is not just to escape Babylon but also to meet like-minded people who will understand and appreciate the things that I do including psychedelics. How much fun would it be to be able to trip with fellow brothers and sisters every week and not only bond emotionally but spiritually as well.

In my current location, i do not have this... I am suffocated by either those who do not approve or those that approve but see it as strange and will not share my interest. I do not want this where I travel next. I have respect for those who choose not to use drugs and can be great friends with them, but to have one or two buddies that will walk this road with me would be a godsend.

I think a lot of people looking into communes are unaware of the hard work that it comes with, and are just interested in the drugs.

Then, they go to join one and get fucked up and don't wanna work. And people wonder why communes hardly ever last.

yeah I mean I squatted for several years in a house in the ghetto with a bunch of other friends, didn't work mainly because we were all junkies. I've changed though, don't touch smack anymore. Not really looking for a commune that focuses on drugs, I would hate this. Just wondering if before you join a commune, if on the application they make it pretty clear what their stance on psychedelics is. Wouldn't want to join, only to find out that I'm as much an outcast there because of my habits as I am here.

i am rather curious of this as well.. i am into psychedelics, as i use them for working towards a higher conciousness and spiritual insight, along with much meditation, yoga, good eating habits, ect to obtain those two things. im not sure the communes i wish to join are okay with the use of psychedelics. where might one be able to find out where accepting communes might be? in particular any in colorado or northern california, thanks peace a love..

Has it occurred to any of you that the reason you don't see communes that advertise drug use (or other illegal activities), is because when they do, they tend to have cops kicking in their doors?

Keeping an intentional community together involves hard work, personal sacrifice and commitment. If a commune or intentional community sticks around for a while it is probably because they have some responsible stable people living there and rules against irresponsible behavior. Unfortunately many people who are into psychedelics and drug use in general are not responsible or stable so either they get kicked out or the communes fail. It's like survival of the fittest.

Really now??? While that is true of some people who are 'into psychedelics and drug use, if you think what you said is true, you really need to do two things....

First is stop hanging around useless people (drug use doesn't make people useless, people do that all by themselves)...

Secondly, you need to realize that 'into drug use' is a very general statement... it includes aspirin, advil, tylenol, coffee, cigarettes, booze and so on...

I will agree in part, with a few modifications...

Useless people who go to communes, don't last long... Regardless of their choice of drug or stimulant, or lack of the same...

Living on a commune has often piqued my interest, too! Especially one in which there is a common tolerance, or, better yet, appreciation for psychedelics. As has already been pontificated on this chat board, there are reasons why such a place may be really difficult, if not impossible, to find. It sure is a beautiful thing to imagine either way. It's pretty cool to know other people like the idea of an earth-friendly, psychedelic-friendly commune. "We live like penguines in the desert. Why can't we live like tribes?" --gavin hayes

As far as I can tell, being public about illegal drug use is an invitation to trouble from the police and the Federal government. Not every town/city/counry is open minded about communal living, and if people don't like you for any reason, they will look for any way to use the legal system to close you down - we have friends in the Philadelphia area who had to close their communal house because it was a "zoning violation." Health codes, drug laws, child protective services, all these things can be used against a group.
