I know absolutely zero about Australia's economy. I'm not even sure what the currency is. What I am wondering is, how far would a salary of 25k - 30k american go there? that is in american dollars. I suppose i could look up the exchange rate, but then again I have you all to help ;) I hope :(

Also, how do the natives view americans - those coming for an extended period, not just tourists.

    I appreciate the info!!

    carnivals....

what exacly do you mean, like a circus? or a fete? or Festival.... We have lots of things here, its like living in a less populated England/America I guess...

but really, what you have access to depends on where you live. Melbourne and Sydney for example recieve the highest amount of foreign entertainment, but some of the other states are more habitiable because the population isn't as concentrated in many of the other states.

It's more expensive to live in the eastern states in general, but this is not always the case, obviously.

I mean like carnivals that set up for county fairs and the like. I usually work for a travelling carnival here in the states and I've always wanted to go work the fairs in Australia and NZ, since you summer, and hence your fair season, is our winter.

I've been wanting to check out nz for a while, if I could hook up with a carnival over there I'd be stoked.

Ok now for the honest economic indicator - how much for a pint of beer at a pub? :)

    hahaha

depends! it varies from state to state.

In Adelaide, my favorite pub has a happy hour and beer is 2.70 a pint, thats about $1.55 US i suppose... so pretty good!

Coffee here is aparently of a better standard than in the US but I dont know how accuate that is

dhs: The aussie dollar at the moment is one big pile of doggie doo, so that kinda wage will get you pretty far.... however if you steer a bit further west than brissy or sydney than it'll be worth even more! All the foreigners go to Sydney........... ALL of them! You won't experience any of the aussie lifestyle over there! So be original and go somewhere else!! heheh... nah, it's a good place, but damn expensive! Aussies generally have low tolerance for arrogance and snobs, so as long as ur laid back u'll be fine :) Oh, and Adelaide has the best beer.

naykidape: we don't got counties here, so we don't got county fairs! In Adelaide there's a royal show and lots of small towns have annual shows that carnies travel around with. But there aint many on the east coast, as they have the big theme parks and whatnot. You'd be better off looking for work in central aus somewhere :)

I actually was leaning towards Brisbane - from what I read its a bit smaller and has better weather. anyone ever been there and care to chime in their thoughts?

well aus aint exactly known for its vibrant hippy community! :p

Anyways, Brisbane is a great place. always warm and sunny. Still lots of tourists tho, it has all the big theme parks and stuff. But apparently the valley area is kinda alternative and cheaper to live in.

well, there are two programs I'm looking at - one is in Sydney, one in Brisbane. I've had many people from australia work for me over the years in resorts in the US, so I'm considering going there for a year.

well i'd personally rather live in brisbane for a year than Sydney. I imagine there'd be more resorts in brisbane too if u're gonna work in one.

heres a site for ya: www.migrationint.com.au
