So i have no experiences with dreads and all i know about is the conflicting info i've found on the web. My hair is about a foot long around the bangs and front, 8 inches at the back and top. I want to dread my hair but i want to keep it as long as possible as i dont want to get that short all over the place dread look. So i guess that rules out the backcomb method and i thought i'd go with the braid method. Im caucasian with thick brown straight hair. Will the braid technique work? If not what other method could i use? Even if it may not work as well i will try it thought. Then what do I do to take care of it? I've heard you should palm roll it, but from other people you should palm roll it.. so im confused about that too. I'd love the look and im intrigued about how to go about doing it so any info would be great. EDIT: are there any other methods that will reduce loss of length?
Hi, And Welcome dethados, There Is A Sticky At The Top Of This Page Headed "READ THIS BEFORE POSTING" Or Risk Getting Flamed.... Pour Yourself A Glass Of Wine, Then Sit Back And Absorb All The Wisdom It Contains.... If You Still Have Any Questions, Then Please Feel Free To Ask.... Once Again, Welcome. Cheers Glen.
Why thank for for the warm welcome. I prefer a fine glass of whiskey but i shall indeed sit back and embrace the wave of knowledge in this ocean of wisdom. After reading the "READ THIS BEFORE..." thread, i am considering mixing methods and backcombing just the roots then braiding. Or I may go straight to braiding. I could possibly braid the hair, but leave some hairs loose and crochet them back in to give it the twisted look. Would anyone happen to know if there is a way to make the braids lock faster or at least look more like braids quicker? I wouldn't want to walk around looking like a flit for half a year with my breads and such.
I dont think anyone here has tried the braiding method, and I dont think youll achieve "Dreads" by using that method in general at least not anytime in the next few years. If your worried about losing length then maybe dreads arent for you, because shrinking with dreads usually means there getting tighter which is what most people look for. The only method I can think of would be crochet but even then you will lose length but youll have quicker results than other methods.
this is another troll lmao a good one too. dreaqs breads well which are they? i especially love how you ignored the fact that braiding is probably the suckiest way if you want "insta locks"

does your hair still grow out of your head? because any loss of length is temporary. but then again i had a roommate backcomb her hair that was almost to her elbows and within two months they were so short and fat that she couldn't tie a ponytail. there's really no way to tell how much length you'll lose. the neglect method seems to lose the least, though. or maybe it's just that the loss is spread out over time
I Lost Half My Length In The First Six Months, Seems The Finer Your Hair, The Quicker It Locks Up, But The Downside Is You Lose Length Bigtime Cheers Glen.
OP...I've only known one person in my life to dread via the braid method...and needless to say they combed within a year. I believe somewhere on this forum somebody posted a video or picture timeline...dont remember which it was but it was of a woman who did the braided method. It basically took her hair 7 years to turn into dreads! So....if you have that kind of superior patience then go for it! Or you could just backcomb, go neglect, or twist and rip. With one of those methods you'll have locks within a 2-3 year time frame...much faster...and it'll spare you the shame of being a white kid with retarded braids. Not all hair shrinks massively...it depends on your hair type. My hair is very thin and has been shrinking like a mofo...however Pandy's hair hasnt shrunk a bit...then again he's Asian so maybe that has something to do with it. teehee. Anyways...you said your hair was mid back? The shrinkage wouldnt be that bad....if you want locks though it's a risk you have to take. cheerio.
Yeah thats the same thing that happened to me, started with fine straight hair down to my nips and it shrunk up to nearly my ears. Nearly down to my ass now though Oh and hello there again HF, been fucking yonks since Ive been on :cheers2:

Im surprised the boards have even coped thought Id return to a lost site of trolling and cp. I think HF is too civilised for that though
I Can't Believe My Eyes....You Just Said Hip Forums, And Civilised In The Same Sentence.... I Have Been A Member Here For Three Years, And Trust Me, Nobody Has Ever Described H.Fs As Even Remotely Close To Civilised.... Cheers Glen.
i crocheted. lost almost no length and my hair length is similar to urs (caucasian). crochet is good imo for sectioning though the dreads themselves arent as tight as they could be...
I've seen braided dreads, though I diden't discuss them with their owner. They where just braids that where obviously fused, you couldn't just unbraid them, pretty much patterned dreads. It looked like they'd been neglected since, and where 4mo-1yr old, I'd guess. They where in kinky afro hair, however. But yeah, they where "dreads" for sure, not braids. I'm still not sure, but at some point I may acquire some neglected braids mixed in with my neglect locks. However, it's probably not going to give the steriotypical dread look you probly want.
