Hey y'all, I love your little continent down there. I'm an Australian American. Interesting mix, eh? I was born in Mona Vale Hospital, but grew up in Miami, Fl. I do have 2 passports. Unfortunately, I didn't get back to Australia until I was almost 26. I worked in a bar for 10 months, then traveled and worked in another bar in Cairns for 3 months before I left. I was in Australia for a total of 15 months. I only left because I wanted to be at home with my family for christmas. I loved Australia, and when I am done with my doctoral degree and have made some money, I will be back.

Here's my question, though. What is the current state of the aborigines? When I was in Sydney I didn't see many aborigines. There was one woman, a regular, that came into our bar alot. We threw her our a couple of times under the law that you can't serve someone that is drunk. And several of them got on the 423 or 426 bus with me on Enmore and Addison Roads. Then one of them pulled a couple of tallies of Carlton out of a bag and started passing them around.

Then I go up to Cairns. There are more aborigines up there. You can usually see them standing around on the corner or in one of the plazas drinking. Never mind the time of day. I saw two working, one at McDonalds and one in the employment office. Surely there were other aborigines working, but I just didn't recognize them as such. Of the ones I did recognize, usually they were drinking.

I don't judge people, I don't have racist tendencies, I only report the facts. And I do tend to drink too much, also, but I also work hard in order to get my degree and make some REAL money. So, I wonder, what is the state of the aborigines, down there. I worry about them, considering the behaviour I witnessed.

the aboriginal community has a lot of problems

the bare bones of the problem lies in the fact that in the 1700's when the british arrived in "terra nullis", the aboriginals were in every way a stone age society, they could fashion the tool from stone and used fire but apart from that they did very little in the 40-50, 000 years they lived in australia. having a vast food source essentially negated any real need to do much, they never even invented the wheel. when the british arrived it was like the film independence day, they had no way of negotiating with the alien species that had decided to call australia home.

fast forward a couple of hundred years and the aboriginals are fast turning into pages of history books, the power brokers of the country still don't understand them or want to understand them. installing the aboriginal community into the heart of the city was a great mistake as it was crippling what is essentially a nomadic community.

i don't have any answers but have given you my opinion for what its worth.

I also have read that for a long time killing an aboriginal was not quite illegal. Kinda like jay-walking, probably not something you are supposed to do, but you aren't really going to get in trouble for it.

    Damn shame.

The native americans over here were dealt a shitty hand as well. All of them hearded into reservations where nobody (including them, oft times) wants to be.

It's just such a wierd situation when you think about it with today's equality based mind.

unfortunately you have a situation where people are attacked an a regular basis by aboriginals. the company i used to work for actually brought in a policy whereby their employees must be escorted by the police so they can do essential maintenace/ repairs in aboriginal areas after someone was viciously attacked from behind.

you can close your eyes to reality with the curtains of politcal correctness but all the good will in the world won't help you as you lay their being pummeled by a wooden length of 4" by 2" . the proponents of political correctness rarely live in the areas of the people they seemingly cherish so dearly.

for what its worth you will find this to hold true in most cases

political correctness says it is worse to racially villify someone than it is to actually kill them .

now, IF I WERE the american president stood up infront of the cameras and said, "those filthy iraqis, they are the lowest in the food chain, like rats they must be wiped out for the purity of the white race"

this would provoke an immediate outcry from everyone.

if i were the american president and just attacked the iraqis killing them under the banner of truth and justice and some pretence of having WMD's (that i later said they didn't have and laughed about it - curious that isn't it?), few people would say anything.

thus it is the state of affairs of today when you can attack someone on a racial basis and get away with it (religion plays a big part in this too if you look right into it).
