I'm thinking about getting Dreadlocks, if you haven't already guessed. I use to have very long hair, but recently cut it short, like a typical male haircut. I'm not regretting cutting it, because now I'm considering growing my hair long again, to get dreadlocks. I have very fine & straight hair. I also have somewhat oily hair. Its not terribly oily, but after a day or two it gets somewhat oily and smelly. To put it in simple terms, its a tiny bit on the oily side. I'm white, and I know a lot of people say "Oh man, white people shouldn't get dreadlocks, blah blah blah", so please don't give me any of that. I want to get them not to be "Cool" or "Hip". I want them because Dreadlocks are 'different' and its just another way I can express myself. Anyway. I have very fine, straight hair. I'm not balding, or thinning...its just I have fine hair. I was wondering if its still good to get dreadlocks? I don't intend on wearing them down, just tied back because thats the look I'm going for. Will having fine, straight hair effect the volume of my dreads? I don't want thick dreads, or really thin dreads. I just want dreads about 3/4 and inch to an inch each. Would this be manageable? Would it come out bad? Please, any advice or suggestions would be great! I'll post a few pictures of the look I'm talking about, and please just tell me if its possibly to get it with fine hair. 1. http://www.fotosearch.com/comp/IGS/IGS512/IS605-017.jpg 2. http://www.hudin.com/img/box/859.jpg And finally, the girl on the bottom right... 3. http://www.hudin.com/img/box/965.jpg And since I don't have a picture of myself, I'll post a picture of my kind of hair. 4. http://www.pg.com/science/haircare/h...19/hair_19.jpg P.S. Thats not me...just a picture I found on google. Anyway, please give me any feedback. Much appreciated. Peace.
hmm only one of those links worked which was the first one. Anyways you wont get none of that white people shouldnt have dreads here Trust me. Well if you want dreads that size and you say your hair kinda fine then you would have to use a thick ammount of hair cause boy they do shrink up bigtime mine were fat at first now they got super skinny an i have thick hair. Thats just the locking process. Yes you can get dreadlocks no matter how your hair is. BUt like i said if you hair is kind of fine thin etc and you want dreads of that size i would go with a good bit of hair. A picture would be good. also check out the need inspiration thread for more eyedeas. ill get link http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=270541&f=209
I have thin and oily hair. My hair is dreading up fine. Im using the natural method. Its taking a long time and requires patience...but overall dreading fine oily hair is very possible. Just start washing with a residue free shampoo and stop brushing or running your fingers through your hair. Within a couple of weeks your hair will start naturally sectioning. At this point you can either continue going naturally or you can backcomb. If your hair is really short than the natural [non backcombing] method would probablly be best till your hair grew out some. In order to backcomb successfully I think you need at least 4-6 inches of hair. As your hair dreads...especially if you go all natural, the dreads will develop a mind of their own and it will be difficult to keep them all a certain width. My advice is to just love and accept whatever happens!
your hair will dread just fine because u cut it short it will take lil longer especialy if u go natural which definately works faster with 4-6 inches or more if you choose to backcomb, you should have at least 3 inches to start but again the longer it is the quicker it wikll actualy dread either way you go since your starting with shorter hair it will be at least 6 months or more before u can start to tie em back youd problyt be best off starting to wash with non residue soaps or the deep clease doing sea salt sprays and wearring a wool hat alot while it grows out to 4 inches or so chances are by the time u get to 4 unches they'll be dreading fine on theyre own but if not then iu can backcomb
Thank you all for the tips and advice! I was thinking of growing my hair long again, and when its down to my shoulder, backcombing it. From what I've gathered, it takes longer to grow when its in dreadlocks? Since I'd wear it tied back all the time, or in a Dreadhat, I'd want it long enough to tied back. Should I let it grow a few inchs, or would it be best for me to dread it now and let it thicken up first than grow? Thanks for all the kind words and tips! Peace
Only the first link worked for me. Anyway, you will be fine. Read the STICKIED thread at the top of this forum, and read around a bunch. Thin hair? No problem. White? No problem. Oily hair? No problem. Read up a bunch, and you will see that many have asked the same questions. You will be just fine. If your hair is oily, just be sure to wash it often with the correct kinds of soap(s).
if your wanting fat dreads don't make more than 20 -22ish total (if you backcomb it's self explanitory how to do that, if you go natural and they part themselves into more than 22ish let them combine together, maybe some one else can explain that i'm not good at explaining that one)
Thank you all for your wonderful and kind words. The only question holding me back was if my 'fine, straight hair' would hold me back from getting nice dreads. Now I know it won't, and I'll look fine. I have decided to begin my Dreadlock journey today. My hair is only an inch long. I plan on growing it out for a year, to a year & a half so its long enough to tie back when I dread my hair. Thank you all for the wonderful words and advice. I know its probably annoying to have a random person sign up, and post a thread, on a random topic, but you have all been very patient and kind enough to take the time to reply to my questions. For that I appreciate it. I'll be sure to update you guys every so often when I get a chance. Till than, god bless and peace to all!
