Why is atheist and agnostic in the same forum? Aren't they like, totally different things? The way I learned it: Agnostic: One who isn't sure if a god(ess) exists; or who believes, but doesn't care. Atheist: One who doesn't believe ANYTHING supernatural (including deities) Correct me if I'm wrong, or if I'm right than...well...why are they in the same forum?
I agree with your definitions, in general, and I don't know why they are lumped together. It might just be because neither one would be popular enough on its own, or maybe because the kinds of questions and opinions that the two belief systems often make are quite similar. For myself, I have come up with the term 'apathetic ignoramagnostic theist'. I don't know if there is a God, but I do believe in something, I just don't know what, and I don't care if anyone else agrees or not.
Ryupower: Agnosticism is often falsely identified as atheism. That is probably why they are in the same forum. Because both of them can be lumped into the group of "non-believers," even though technically agnostics are also not "non-disbelievers" either. But heck, I thought I was an atheist until someone told me what agnosticism was. So that's probably the answer to your question right there.
everybody is agnostic. agnostic christians, agnostic atheists, agnostic everybody. the real point is belief - belief or disbelief in a god.
Even if you're certain/really dont care that there is no god? I always considered agnostics to be people who think their is a god, but still want to know more... or something..... I know that there is no god, and if there is, well good for him. I'd rather chill with Satan in the afterlife anyway.
Okay ... let's see ... Theist - Someone who definately believes in a god. Not necessarily someone who refutes the possibility of a god not existing, but they do believe a god exists. Atheist - Someone who definately believes that no god exists. Not that they definately say a god CANNOT exist, but they don't believe one does. Agnostic - Someone who doesn't know whether or not their judgment is firmly placed in either belief or disbelief of a god/gods. Someone who sees evidence for both sides in relatively equal proportions, OR someone who doesn't believe or disbelieve because they think it is impossible to both prove and disprove. Either, you believe, you disbelieve, or you are "suspending judgment" because you don't have enough information to come to a conclusion. Believers are theists, disbelievers are atheists, and people who are suspending their judgment until they are certain are agnostics.
Thanks for the information ppl.! Especially Hikaru, because he explained it in more 'technical' terms...
i would assume an athiest would believe in a god if they saw the god right? And agnostics say we cant know either way, but if one were to see a god they would believe in god as well. So athiests arent so different from agnostics in that neither of them want to believe in a god until they see it with their own eyes.
And yet, if it were definately proven that no gods exist whatsoever, some theists would also disbelieve in all gods' existances. And some atheists, in the event a god is proven, would still disbelieve the evidence, I'm sure. Just because atheists and agnostics would believe the same thing if things were different doesn't mean they should be classified accordingly. Because things aren't different. =) Alas, this happens a lot anyway. Not much you can do about it. Ah well ... not that it matters. If a god doesn't exist, it doesn't look like he's doing much that affects us anyway.
ryupower Correct. Occam has never understood why athiesm.. the shit end of moron physchosis. Was lumped with agnosticism.. Occam thinks it is a result of not wanting to upset the fragile minds within the specific religion forums. Athiesm should NOT HAVE A FORUM. Why.. Because occam has not yet met an athiest who could support his position for longer than 5 minutes. Just like those who think man didnt land on the moon. Occam
i disagree: is it not true that agnosticism is a statement about what a person KNOWS and atheism a statement about what a person BELIEVES (to be true)? therefore, is not everyone agnostic, as no can truly knows the truth? and isn't the atheist justified in saying that while he doesn't know for sure, he doesn't believe that there is a god? sophia
