I have a confession to make. I am addicted to a substance worse than herion. The culprit is nicotine. The first step is wanting to quit. Can anyone help me find ways to quit smoking without a nicotine patch or gum? Have any of you quit smoking? If so, how did you do it? Please share your words of advice to me. I appreciate it alot!

    Peace and love

I quit by locking myself in a room for a long weekend. After that, I avoided things that I associated with smoking.. like coffee... the two were linked in my mind. Other than that, its up to you... YOU have to want to do it, really, really want to do it.

    God, I need to quit.
I quit for four months before. The most helpful thing for me was joining quitnet.com and spending LOTS of time on there, motivating myself to keep quit.

I feel guilty that I started again as a result of stress and stupidity... Im on birth control now, and know the dangers of smoking + birth control and I'd like to quit again, but I want to make sure I'm of sound mind before I quit again... don't need to get stuck in prison for killing someone, lol.

The first time I quit, I quit at a time like this, where I was super stressed, and all I did was fight with my fiancee....poor bloke. The time that I stayed quit for four months, I quit when I felt calm and peaceful with my life, and I was rather sucessful. I would love to do it again soon, and I'm hoping once fall rolls around I'll be able to.

I have a weird connection with smoking in the hot summer sun... don't ask.

I've quit and started back so many times I don't know what else to do. I tried gum the last time and started again after a few months. I never even started to break the addiction, I just substituted the gum. I wish you luck and strength.

The only time I really quit was whe I fell for this beautiful dreadlocked girl while touring with the Dead. She was so anti-smoking that I had no chance if I smoked tobacco. We chased the Dead around together for the better part of a year until we drifted apart. I was nicotine free for another year and then started smoking again. But alas, that was twenty years ago.

do it the easy way, do it the cheap way
buy a big bag of lemons
everytime you want a cigarette shove a quarter of a lemon in your mouth
pretty soon your body will reject the craving

I plan that, when I quit smoking again [hopefully soon] everyday that I would buy a pack of cigarettes I'm going to put the amount I would spend on them into a savings account.

Should be a good way to stay motivated.

I need to quit too, and it can't be THAT hard. Just the bad mood that comes along with withdrawal is what gets me--and I don't want to be one of those people who substitutes smoking with overeating.

I quit for a couple years, my inspiration was getting pregnant. I started back up recently but am on the verge on quitting again. The only advice I can give you, if you want to quit naturally, is to try to push back that first cigarette as long as you can, easier said than done I know, good luck

I've just stopped smoking b/c I live in a non smoking dorm that makes you smoke at least 30 feet from the entrance and cigarettes can be bought off campus, a little bit of a walk. It's been 6 days since my last cigarette but I still have thoughts and even dreams about smoking. Yes, I have been eating more, but my little body can use the extra food. Hopefully I'll gain 10+ pounds and I'll be set.

    Peace and love

I have quit smoking more times than I'd care to count... the patch, the gum, those pills (the antidepressent ones), you name it, I've tried it. I did manage to quit throughout my entire pregnancy, but then started back up again. What I have found to be much more effective, for me anyway, is to cut back. I had to totally stop the habitual smoking, like when I was driving or on the phone or drinking alcohol (at those times, I now chew on toothpicks instead). When I start wanting a smoke, put it off a while. Then put it off a little longer. But I don't beat myself up every time I have one, either. I'm down to maybe a pack a week now, sometimes a pack lasts me two weeks. Most days I only have one or two cigarettes, and it's no big deal anymore for me to go an entire day without a smoke. I can live with that.

From what I've seen it's not all that easy, my neighbor was addicted to heroin and couldn't just go through three days and have it be over. Maybe it's different for different people. Then again, now he's on methodone and apparently coming off of that is even worse than coming off heroin, but he's 2 years off of the heroin and staying strong.

Rev. Soaring Turkey does a free hypnosis quit smoking intensive at rainbow gatherings. He moved me into a deeply relaxed alapha brainwave state where you tap into self healing. It worked. blissboy_108@yahoo.com

I meant to say something about hypnosis as well. I did that and that is how I quit smoking. It's been 7 months 1 week 3 days and counting since I smoked a cigarette. I'd look into it for anyone who wants to quit smoking. I was still bitchy for a while, but the want for a cigarette was gone completely.

It took me six tries and I got discouraged and didn't try to quit again. But that's the Key:Don't stop trying to quit smoking. Eventually you will be successful.
