Like I've said, I have been generally against the idea of retribution and punishment for 30 years now. (But like I tell people, I still believe in things like moral responsibility and maybe deterrence being at least some part of our justice system.) But I brought up this next one in my recent post on moral progress. Quotes people have said through the years that I agree with. I think it's really great when I don't agree with the person who said it at all. Or when the quote is very old, which I think shows what I am talking about is universal and timeless. Here are just a few. “All punishment is mischief. All punishment in itself is evil.” Jeremy Bentham. “Hate the crime and not the criminal.” Mahatma Gandhi. “Life imprisonment is a hidden death penalty.” Pope Francis. “Men simply copied the realities of their hearts when they built prisons.” Richard Wright. “No one commits crime for the fun of it. It is a sign of a diseased mind. The causes of a particular disease should be investigated and removed.” Mahatma Gandhi. “People are unrealistic, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway.” Mother Teresa.
