of course everyone has their own opinion of what "real" hip hop is... no one can really define what the word real means, especially with hip hop expanding as a genre. but here are some of my favorite artists, feel free to contribute... a tribe called quest aesop rock beastie boys blackalicious busta rhymes (early stuff) common eminem (some) j-live jay-z jurassic 5 k-os kanye west lauryn hill (when she was a rapper) MF doom and madlib (madvillain) missy elliot (yeah, the beats are hot) mobb deep mos def nas notorious BIG outkast people under the stairs the roots royce da 5'9 snoop dogg (early stuff) talib kweli tupac wu-tang
i thought 2pac was pretty good but some of his stuff is..repetpetive or whatever haha and yes snoop was good back then..now he sucks and hes on a whole buncha lame commercials haha! and jay-z thinks hes like the best rapper alive. oh and nas is alright sometimes and I like nappy roots
hmmm, Afroman, his lyrics are out way out there. Eminem, well a lotta ppl hate his guts but you cant deny that he is one of the most skilled rappers on the planet. The only person that I can think of that would be able to hang with his freestyle would be Lil' Flip. Master P (early stuff) 50 cent (another one with good lyrics)
There's so much good hip-hop apart from the shit-hop on MTV. De La Soul The Herbaliser Public Enemy Hip-Hop dj wise Q-Bert Dj Craze Scratch Perverts Cut-Chemist Dj Shadow etc etc. I saw Michael Franti play a festival in Ireland last year, he was brilliant, there was a real energy about his performance.
Yeah man, it's fan-fuckin-tastic! Have his secong album Private Press aswell which is pretty cool aswell. He has a savage mix cd called Brainfreeze he did with Cut-Chemisst, the two of them on 4 decks and 2 mixers mixing all 7" soul records, it's fuckin superb, check it out if you get a chance. Also Q-bert did a Dj Shadow megamix which is well worth checking out, came as the second cd on Shadows Pre-Emptove strike album.
I cant believe that you guys can say REAL hiphop and completely forget about "the teacher" KRS-one, by far the greatest lyricist of all time when it comes to hiphop. As for Jay-Z.... he does nothng but bite rhymes, he has no skill, over-rated rapper if i've ever seen one, and 50cent??? damn another waste of good talent gone to mainstream, he was good when he was underground, then mtv/eminem had to ruin it. Oh another REAL hiphop star DJ Screw, the inventor of "Chopped and Screwed" what the south is famous for
amg doc masta ace heiro living legends souls of mischeif kool keith ultramagnetic emcees black moon boot camp clik COLD CRUSH!
Yeah.... I like Franti and Spearhead... they're really great. They're different from others in the genre.
You, my friend, have just impressed me! I didn't expect anyone on this site to know about DJ Screw or chopped and screwed music. I'm from Houston so I listen to alot of Houston rap (Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Trae, Z-Ro, 50/50 and a bunch of others).
Yea, if i listen to any rap anymore, which is pretty rare these days, im listening to nothin but the south, swisha house and all them boys, the south is full of unsigned hype, and i hope it stays that way, then they always will be keeping it real, unlike all these east/west coast rappers that sell out the minute they hit the light.... as a side note.... sad that the south lost one of their greatest duos to the east coast.... 8ball & MJG
shit man, i know all about krs... sometimes i make these posts and don't really list everyone that i have on my playlist. sorry bro...
Gotta love the southern rap...Screw, South Park Mexican I find SPM to have very clever lyrics, with fresh beats. Pharcyde too, always fresh. Lots of people down here LOVE all the Lil Scrappy, Lil John, and Trillville stuff. I'm still warmin up to it, we like to smoke while listenin to the southern rap
