Guys, I'm recently going red meat-free, not quite vegetarian, but almost. The thing is that I've got an iron deficiency(sp?) and taking red meat out of my diet will make me even more iron-deficient(sp?). What can I eat in place of red meat for some good iron? Help?
leafy greens ~ spinich ~ also you can go to www.fitday.com and it has lots of calorie/ vitamin counters etc...
first of all there are plenty of veggies you can eat that contain iron. I am not certain why it is believed that you can only get it from red meat. Here is a link to a list of fruits and veggies that provide ample iron: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm#table1 and http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/iron.htm#table3 You might also, talk with some folks here who are vegetarians or vegan and see if they can provide you with addition info. Also, most of the meatless foods out there are fortified with iron and other nutrients. I haven't eaten red meat for about 8 years now, and there is nothing wrong with me. Now you have a pre-existing condition, so you might just check with you doctor first to see if they have any advice for managing it. Good luck! MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Anything green and leafy. I suggest getting a 'nutrition for vegetarians' book out the ol' library to make sure you have the other bases covered too.
wow...i could never make it a whole day with out eating meat...it's kinda sad but I dont think i could. I enjoy meat...
