I don't really know much about reggae but we got a fellow that just moved in with us and that's pretty much all he listens too. He's pretty good at mixing the reggae too and he's been edumacating us. Sizzla and Burning Spear come up quite a bit. Collie Budz
The Rasta movement started as a liberation movement for all black people. It was a way for black people to unite and rise above the global oppression. The first person to share rasta ideals was later committed to an insane asylum...because...well.....he was literally insane. I forget his name. But he was trying to get blacks to kill whites. Marcus Garvey was the next person to come along and he preached the positive message that the first guy was trying to get across...but without the violence. MG was the Martin Luther King of his time...but he also believed that all blacks should return to Africa to reclaim their mother land and be as one again. MG was a very noble, brave, proud and just man. His wife....carap...forgot her name....was also very influential and did amazing things for the black movement. When Hailie Sellassie became emperor of Ethiopia....it gave black people hope that liberation was near. Sellassie became to Rastafarianism what the Dalai Lama is to Buddhism. In other words...Rastas believe that Sellasie is of the divine blood line and is King Solomons descendant. Eventhough Sellasie wasnt able to free his people...he did wonders for their souls. He is most known for his amazing speeches about equality, liberation, and freedom. Ras is Ethiopian for Prince...and Tafari was Sellasie's name before he became King. Thus the term Ras Tafari...or Rastafarian. Rasta's live a spiritual life very similiar to Christianity. For the teachings both stem from the bible. Anywhoo....any comments from anybody? Did I portray it correctly? Im not Rasta....Im Buddhist...but I love studying religion and the psychology behind it all. Its fascinating to me.
