It's a moderately long read, but it's worth it, imo.

It was a great letter, but it left me wondering a couple things. Why is he speaking to his ten year old daughter through letters? Did she read it? Did she read it in one sitting? Did she understand it? Enjoy it? What did she think of the letter?

I have trouble with the idea of teaching such important things to a ten year old through a long letter. I don't know why because I liked reading all kinds'f stuff when I was younger.

There is one thing that is troubling to leave out though. He didn't say anything about respecting other people's traditions. Seems a rather important thing to know for swimming through the seas of people. Hopefully the mother will cover that part.

How did you feel about it?

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Dawkins is the boss of all bosses, with the exception of Neil deGrasse Tyson, of course.

Well, the letter was in a book he wrote. I doubt he intended for her to read it until she got a bit older.

I thought something similar when I first read it, but I think he may have intentionally left out the "respecting other people's traditions" aspect, because he just wanted her to know why people believe what they believe and he wants her to find her own way. That may not be the case though, because not only is Dawkins an atheist, but he's an anti-theist and absolutely hates what religion has done to this world, as far as creating bigotry, inequality, and intolerance.

will the daughter reject his authority ? does he present any
evidence that he loves her ? he hopes she'll think very carefully and
also that he is very important person .

    Yes.

I keep trying, but it's so long..... considering there's probably nothing that I'll take issue with, or anything.

I would think that it is not really intended for his daughter, it's more of a literary device.

Does anybody know of any e.g's? I struggle to believe ( :dizzy2: ) that there has been a war regarding the fate of Mary.

lol Yeah, it is a long read. I usually don't have the attention span to read something that long either, but I found it really interesting.

Maybe you're right. Maybe it's intended to be an example of how a person could explain the concept of religion, tradition, etc. to their children. Teaching them HOW to think, as opposed to WHAT to think.

There's constant genocide in Africa based on religious differences; usually involving christians vs. mulsims, and sometimes different denominations of the same religion. Hitler had millions of jews slaughtered in the name of the christian/catholic god. Not to mention the crusades. The list could go on and on, but I just woke up and don't feel like finding examples. lol

BTW, why "odonII"? What happened to "odonI"? lol

I never knew Hitler murdered those jews in name of religion. In fact I'm pretty sure that was not done because of religious differences at all... Same but a bit less obvious perhaps counts for the crusades.

I didn't mean MAJOR issues - such as one faith pitted against another.
Nor territorial issues - access to holy lands etc.
    I meant minor differences.
I just thought about it, and lets say the difference between Sunni And Shia Muslims.
Richard said: '...often go to war over their disagreements.'
I still think it is one group against another, rather than over a certain minor religious argument.

Exactly...!!! A not so small detail often ignored. The religious background is convenient and in a lot of cases used as an excuse. It's almost always about power, land, money, influence etc. Even when there's a 'valid' religious argument :)p) there are other stakes that make people decide it is actually worth massacring your fellow men for.

“The anti-Semitism of the new movement (Christian Social movement)
was based on religious ideas instead of racial knowledge.”
[Adolf Hitler, "Mein Kampf", Vol. 1, Chapter 3]

“I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty
Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord’s work.”
    [Adolph Hitler, Speech, Reichstag, 1936]

“I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of
    the Almighty Creator.”
[Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp. 46]

“What we have to fight for…is the freedom and independence of the
fatherland, so that our people may be enabled to fulfill the mission
assigned to it by the Creator.”
[Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp. 125]

“And the founder of Christianity made no secret indeed of his
estimation of the Jewish people. When He found it necessary, He drove
those enemies of the human race out of the Temple of God.”
    [Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp.174]

“Catholics and Protestants are fighting with one another… while the
enemy of Aryan humanity and all Christendom is laughing up his sleeve.”
    [Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp.309]

“Any violence which does not spring from a spiritual base, will be
wavering and uncertain. It lacks the stability which can only rest in
    a fanatical outlook.”
[Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, p. 171]

    ...........and so on.

That is very true. People often use religion as a means for personal gain, and often interpret their religious texts to suit their personal opinions and beliefs, basically creating religion within religion.

"With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil—that takes religion." - Steven Weinberg
